Description

Specialties

Marra Dreaming is an Aboriginal Community Centre located at 22 Commercial Road, Salisbury and approximately 20 kilometres north of the Adelaide. Marra Dreaming produces a wide range of contemporary Indigenous Australian art by both established and emerging local artists including: fine art, jewellery, hand-painted ceramic items both beautiful and useful, decorated eggs, didgeridoos, clapsticks, traditional woven baskets and silk scarves in a glorious rainbow of colours.

Artists work in residence at Marra Dreaming, and visitors may observe them creating. Our on-site retail outlet allows us to showcase the work of both established and emerging artists including limited numbers of boomerangs, didgeridoos and paintings on canvas. Marra Murrangga Kumangka means, «hands work together» in the Kaurna language and this is the ethos of our organisation.

We also provide cultural experiences for schools, government departments and anyone whom would like to experience the Indigenous culture. These experiences give the participants the opportunity to try traditional basket weaving, dot painting or canvas painting whilst learning about the Indigenous culture from our artists and volunteers. You are also offered damper, kangaroo and a try platter. Bookings are essential for cultural experiences and must be booked at least two weeks in advance.

Please come down to Marra Dreaming. We would love to have you visit our centre.

History

Established in 1998.

We are a cultural community centre located in the Northern suburbs of Adelaide. It was established in 1999 by predominately Aboriginal women from various regions of Australia. It was initially set up to provide a space for Aboriginal people to develop their artwork and is now a thriving meeting place for community to experience and explore the Aboriginal culture.

Our authentic art pieces, created by emerging and established Aboriginal artists, are for sale and are exhibited in our art gallery located on site.

We foster healing (social, emotional, and spiritual well being) and cultural awareness by running arts and crafts programs for Aboriginal people and the wider community.

Marra Dreaming also provides social and community services for Aboriginal people as well as the promotion and assistance of training & employment opportunities to enhance the economic and social development of individuals, families and communities
