Love this place, everyone should get their meat here. Sensational cuts, excellent service and decent price for the quality I believe. I have completely stopped getting my meat from anywhere else and every bite of my delicious steak thanks me for that. If you are around the Richmond area stop by and give them a try.

Good selection of all things meat. Stopped by for a bite to eat and this may become a regular thing, $ 10 for a pulled pork burger… not bad at all. I have heard great things about the café out back but didn’t go there, just sat out the front with our new puppy who of course got more attention than my burger.

Been there twice. Nice branding, and I like supporting local small businesses. First time I went in the hipsters behind the counter didn’t know cuts of meat. Second time they gave ordinary grade beef — tough compared to what I’m used to. Maybe I’m missing something but doubt I’ll return.

It’s not often I get excited about a butcher. I mean, I do love my meat, but the process of getting it is usually more of a hassle than anything else. Bertie’s, on the other hand, is different. Bertie’s is more like a speciality food store — championing the ‘paddock to plate’ cause. They use free range meat and butcher the entire carcass — which means you can literally pick any cut you like and ask for help on how to prepare it. The same amount of thought is given to the condiments and accompanying food and booze — all very high quality and appear to be from local or speciality producers. What keeps me coming back though is their lunch offering. They make a daily selection of salads, usually vegetarian, but you can select a freshly cooked meat to add as accompaniment like pulled pork, roast turkey or lamb. In winter, they make deliciously rich soups that you almost need a knife and fork for.

Today was the first time I visited Bertie’s Butcher. After reading about it on Broadsheet, I was quite enthused to visit. The premise is commendable. Everything is free range, and they bring in only whole carcasses which they butcher themselves.(I’ve yet to validate this) They have a great selection of cuts on display, with beef and pork being the most prominent. The chicken side was a bit limited. Prices are slightly higher than those chain supermarkets, which is to be expected considering all the meat is free range and butchered in house. I purchased some pork belly and American pork ribs. I’ve cooked the pork belly already and I have to say it tastes amazing. The pork was very fresh. My only qualm was that the pork belly came with the ribs attached. I wasn’t expecting this as most pork belly I’ve seen are boneless. It is my fault for not noticing at the shop, but it would have been nice if the butcher had pointed it out, since most pork belly dishes I’ve had do not have the bones. But besides that minor blunder, I’ll definitely be going back for more meat and butcherly advice. I hope to find a local butcher that you can speak to about cuts and meat, and get advice on the best ways of cooking them.

Selling delicious organic meats in a beautifully presented environment. Bertie’s has recently just gone under the knife for a bit of a makeover and what a spectacular job they did. Adding small goods, pantry staples and seasonal vegetables means you can pick up a meal in one go and know it will be delicious. Bertie’s isn’t discount any more but the meats taste amazing and are worth every cent.
