Sutton’s Beach — why did it take 6+ years of living in Brisbane to learn you existed? So close, you are. So kid-friendly with your gentle splashes along the shore. So ready for a day-out with gazebos, park equipment and public BBQs. Granted, you’re no surf beach and you’re not as beautiful as your coastal cousins, but you’re great for a barefoot walk or a quick dip in the ocean. Do watch out for jellyfish here. I’ve been for a few barefoot walks and noticed them in the water. Maybe it was just the season /timing of the visit. Nevertheless, it doens’t hurt to be aware.

For someone who avoids beaches as much as humanly possible, I have to admit, I didn’t hate Suttons Beach. In fact, the experience was fairly pleasant. Suttons Beach stretches forever around the Clontarf, Margate, Redcliffe area; you can park on the street that runs along the beach or if you’re lucky enough to live locally, wander down onfoot. This is a very family friendly environment. The waves are kid-sized, the sand is fairly clean, there are a multitude of picnic benches(some undercover), a clean and well maintained looking playground, a couple of rinse-down showers, some monkey trails on the red rock above, and heaps of space to lay out a bunch of towels on either sand or grass. If you’re looking for an intimate night-picnic on the beach, I’ve been assured it’s perfectly do-able with some good lamp lighting and a homemade pie. If it is normally as windy as it was when I visited, though, you may still want to consider that not-quite-romantic windbreaker, or a camping light instead of candles. The beach is monitored(at least where we were) by our SLS champions. I watched two of them from around 4pm, perched from my safety zone picnic bench, as they jovially attended to jellyfish stings, tourists wanting photos, curious kids, all while keeping their eyes on the water. They started packing up around 5.30−6pm, and headed to the clubhouse close by. There were still quite a few people when they left, though, and I’m not sure what time they start in the morning since we got there quite late. There are shops further inward from where we were located, but when our hunter-gatherers returned with the fish and chips they’d ordered, they told us they’d gotten stopped a few times by visitors to the beach who wanted to know where they’d gotten the grub. Might be worth checking out how far the eateries are from where on the beach you’re planning on plonking your bum.

When I discovered Suttons Beach, I thought–«why have I only just found out about this place». This beach absolutely beautiful and a great place to spend a day with the family or a loved one. I came here with my family during the low tide– around the middle of the afternoon. We dipped our feet in the water and walked towards the ocean for what felt like kilometres– the low tide here is phenomenal as you can just keep walking further and further from land and the water will only reach your ankle. During that walk we noticed millions of tiny soldier crabs hovering around and because the water was so clear, the occasional exotic looking fish made an appearance through the water. The beach was very calm and quiet which was refreshing compared to the beaches on the Gold Coast. After this walk, my family and I had a picnic by the beach, there was plenty of green grass available and even some BBQ for us to cook on. We stayed to watch the sunset, which was a breathtaking view. I am glad I have discovered this beach, it is one of the most pleasant beaches that I have encountered in a while.

Suttons Beach in Redcliffe is one of the best places to spend a day with the family. It has plenty of shaded areas, gazebos with barbecues and a sandy beach for all to have a dip into on a hot day. It’s also one the main area where most festivals are held in Redcliffe. So popular and picturesque is the Suttons Beach, on any weekends you can find a number of happy couples getting married. Because it gets very busy on the weekends be prepared to park a few blocks away. For those that do enjoy a good walk, there is a bike path that goes from one end of Suttons Beach all the way into the Redcliffe shopping district. Also, for those that enjoy a great cuisine, Suttons Beach is also home to a restaurant by the name of Sails. Sutton’s Beach is definitely one of the highlights of Redcliffe you must visit.
