What does a vine-less arbor, a gigantic old-fashioned streetlamp and half a home from 1860 have in common. Yep, they all reside in St Helens Park.
This park is a small green escape. Too small to be an attraction, but a pleasant enough hang space for nearby residents. There are two bbqs, a basic playground, public washrooms(open daily until 8pm) and best of all a button operated doggie water fountain. The driveway is accessible from Prospect Road(locked after 6pm). There’s no official parking on this side, but you can easily leave your car there while you enjoy the park.

This is a park that looks haggard and weary under the summer sun. It’s a brave and noble park and it’s still standing, but it looks like it’s wearing. The grass is still green, though, and I’m happy to report the grass is NOT greener on any other side of St Helen’s Park. Namely, because there’s no other grass. But if there was, I’m sure it wouldn’t have withstood the sun’s rays as well as this grass has. The trees are tall and bountiful in leafage, which makes for very effective shade. There’s a gazebo to cower under as well. You might not enjoy sitting on the grass too much, though. It’s the prickly kind. But if you bring a picnic blanket(which is perhaps a bit excessive for a simple park strip) and a good spot of shade, you’ll be fine. As the review below suggested, though, this seems primarily the sort of place where dog owners come to show off their stock. It kind of makes me wish I had a dog, really. It’s a great excuse to talk to people. Then again, I don’t like people so much. Or dogs. Or prickly grass. But gee wiz, if I did! Boy oh boy.

I don’t have a dog, however, if I did, I am sure he would be very interested in sniffing other dogs butts! Around Prospect there is really only one place to go for such… activities. St Helens Park on Prospect Road has become a haven fo dog owners to meet other dog owners and sniff their butts… I mean let their dogs… sniff…Oh you get it. Other than the joy that it provides for K-9s it is actually a pretty good park and a nice break from the surrounding subburbia. There is a peeerty traditional rotunda in the middle with some play equipment for the small people. Certainly worth checking out, especially if you are a dog/sniffer.
