The grilled fish, especially the grilled calamari is really yummieh! Will definitely come back!

Nice atmosphere. The staff is really friendly and fun. Affordable prices too. I find the fish and chips just above average, but I liked their grilled seafood and the salads a lot. Will be coming next time for some grilled calamari!

I can’t fault these guys. Seriously… I’m not even going to make up a funny suggestion because the owners and operators of Hunky Dory Port Melbourne have perfected the art of ‘modern day fish’n’chippery’. During my most recent health kick I have been desperately craving fish and chips that don’t come to be in an oily box with a half inch think layer of golden, greasy batter(although I would chow down on that in a millisecond). All I want is a perfectly grilled piece of fish(hold the flour, please) served on a bed of brown rice and a side of Greek salad. Funny that, because that’s my all time favourite dish at Hunky Dory. The Mediterranean grill calamari is on par but a larger serving so that is saved for Friday lunch times. Hunky Dory hits it’s peak at summer time and it’s alway best to get down there at 11:45am or 1:30pm if you want to avoid the disappointment of not getting a seat outside in the gorgeous sunshine. Very reasonably priced, you’ll never walk/roll out hungry if you order one of their meal packs. There is a great selection of salads for you to umm and ahh over(garden, greek, quinoa and Asian Greens in winter) that accompany a large range of seafood options. As I said earlier, it’s modern day fish’n’chippery, but the old favourites are still on the menu — the potato cakes are killer!

Omg love this place, the salt and pepper calamari is amaze balls. Super fresh fish and very reasonably priced for the quality and quantity you get.

Not a restaurant but a cool modern day fish & chip shop with fresh ingredients, a good variety ad healthy and tasty food. Never had a bad meal here. Service can be slow when it is busy, had to wait up to an hour on a busy summer’s day. Certainly popular with the locals.

I will start by saying I am a late comer to the seafood scene. I never ate fish as a kid and the thought of tuna makes me meow in fright! Here the fish is fresh and not fishy! If you are not a fish eater then this will make perfect sense. Fantastic to finally have a semi fast food place that serves grilled fish and a variety of salads not just the usual iceberg and tomato deal. Price wise it is great value for money and the opening hours allow for a semi late dinner!

Have been coming here for years and years. Is always SO yummy and fresh. Outdoor seating is always in abundance with patrons happy to share tables with strangers. For those networkers amongst us, it’s a great place to meet awesome like-minded people! Bring your furry mate :) Offering bottled beer and basic«white & red» wine and all sorts of sweet and sugary liquids in their fridge. I always go for the grilled fish & Greek salad. It’s better for them to cook your dinner rather than stinking out your apartment. Always super busy, fresh with a high turnover of food meaning — always fresh. Not a fan of the BLARING disco music though? Why? Just don’t get it. Sometimes it’s so loud, I can’t hear the conversation at the table. All round, this is my fave take away of all time. X

Food’s OK, but the ambience and the clientele are a major turn-off. Essentially this is a fish and chip shop — what makes it different is you can get grilled fish and rice and salad. You also get the worst music in Port Melbourne. Real douchebag club music. And it attracts douchebags. Lots of them. So as much as I might want to eat their fish and chips, the douchebags put me off.

The best Fish and Chips I have eaten not at the beach. The quantities, the quality and the price are all amazing. Please do you self a favour and head here and eat it all!

Imagine eating fish, rice and salad without cutlery or napkins… that was my experience of hunky dory. The staff didn’t put any of the above in the takeaway bag, nor did they tell us that we needed to get some on the way out. This isn’t normal for takeaway. The shop is clearly popular; meaning you wait in a nightclub length line, with blaring house music playing before finally getting to speak to some flustered sweaty counter staff. It’s hot and you can feel the oil from the fryers forming a layer on your skin while waiting in line. Finally after 15 minutes a man with a sweat drenched way low cut white t-shirt, hands over the goods. Remember to get the cutlery! The food: yep pretty good. Good size portions if you get 2 fillets, and they have rice & salad options if you don’t want chips. There is good variety when it comes to the salads too. 5 stars if someone else picked it up and brought it home…2.5 stars after wiping oil from my face and eating rice with my fingers.

I’ve never been a big fish eater — so when my friend suggested Hunky Dory I was a bit uneasy. She promised it’d be good and that it was. The fish was delicious, crumbed and deep fried but not heavy. We had an Oceans 11 meal and it was huge! We shared a Greek salad, which complimented the meal. I am dying to go back, even though its a bit of a hike for me. The prices are great and the atmosphere is buzzing. I chose to sit outside which was awesome, just beware of seagulls. Hunky Dory will no doubt be a hit in summer.

Something about this place makes me wish it wasn’t so ‘hip’. In terms of quality of fare, it ticks all the boxes but certainly isn’t extraordinary, but seems to lack the ‘love’ you get from the fish & chip shop of old. I’m sure that if the staff could hand out helium balloons to patrons with«OMFG aren’t we the coolest, just ask us», they would.

When I was a kid, Friday night was fish and chip night. Mum and Dad would come home with a giant paper wrapped parcel filled with fish and $ 2 worth of chips and we would open it up, eating straight from the spread out paper on the kitchen table. Nowadays ‘fish and chip night’ is more likely to be here at Hunky Dory. I order grilled seafood(fish, calamari and prawns) with a side of brown rice and Greek salad: sit at one of the outdoor tables, be all civilised and eat from a china plate. Sometime I look at other people’s chips and have to hold myself back from launching across the table to steal them. I’m pretending to be healthy, okay? I think Hunky Dory does a fine job with fast, fresh and(mostly) healthy take-away: the crowds are testament to the deliciousness that they serve up at very reasonable prices.

Hunky Dory is the ultimate modern fish and chips shop, cleverly catering to the health conscious as well as those of us who need a traditional fix. You will often see people enjoying seafood options with salad and rice after a workout at the gym or a day at the beach. It is equally popular with the lunch time work crowd. Hunky Dory is very busy but I have always managed to get a seat outside. I am a fan of the grilled fish with rice and greek salad. My husband loves the fried fish of the day with chips. Service is friendly and cheerful. Owing to the busyness of the store you may need to wait a little but that is nothing a Corona or 2 can’t fix whilst you people watch the passerbys on Bay St and listen to the tunes being pumped out onto the street. I would give Hunky Dory a 5 if they took credit card/eftpos. They are cash only but have put in an ATM. I highly recommend a visit to Hunky Dory, you won’t be disappointed.

Hunk Dory, so aptly named. Slang, meaning perfectly satisfactory. The modern fish & chip shop with a twist. They not only serve fresh fish & chips but healthy seafood options including grilled flavours from around the world and convenient fish packs, without the standard heart attack on the side. Now serving open plate souvlaki. A round of applause for that. Now located at three convenient locations, Bay Street Port Melbourne, Clarendon Street South Melbourne & Chapel Street South Yarra. Guess what? All three stores are consistent with their menus. A-Men!
