My quest for a cold beer in the inner west has borne little fruit. Is it my fault that I like Carlton?(VB is OK too) Why must I suffer social isolation for not being partial to paying $ 7.50 and more for beers with names like Leaky Tinnie Ale or Hairy Maggot IPA? Perhaps I should be the star of a new TV show called«I’m thirsty, get me out of here«. It was another super duper humid afternoon in Sydney and the black clouds were rolling in. Rain due any minute meant that only an air conditioned bar like the Petersham Inn would do. The bar was a rare bird indeed with the original yellow tiles still lining the interior. The barmaid was a young French backpacker who fortunately spoke English much better than I did French. The beer was everything a thirsty summertime customer could want from a Carlton — cold, wet, brown, fizzy and served in a chilled glass. But wait there’s more. .. .. . during the 5−7pm happy hour schooners are only $ 4.30. WOOHOO ! Who needs $ 8 Heineken ? Five stars for the beer only. I didn’t eat.

Petersham Inn(or The ‘Shaminn as it’s referred to in some circles) is a spacious pub set on the corner of Parramatta Rd. The bistro serves good food at reasonable prices(Bangers & Mash and Steak & Mash are ‘Shaminn favourites) and there are a good range of beers on tap, including Bulmers Cider and the rare Coopers Stout. The ‘Shaminn has awesome trivia on Tuesdays(general trivia) and Thursdays(music trivia) and their host Jules is top notch. All the staff here are pretty friendly and the patrons are a mixed but quality group of locals. Whilst it has no courtyard for a sunny summer afternoon, the interior is pretty nice. The pub also has pokies and TAB facilities.
