Most people think that Perth’s art scene is non-existence or lacking in comparison to Melbourne or Sydney. However, Free Range is doing something about this by its dedicated support for emerging and established artists across a range of practices. It’s a not for profit, independent run artist collective full of artistic charm. Rumoured to be an old television studio, the petite gallery space is perfect for intimate exhibitions as well as offering a warehouse space behind. It’s recent exhibition PILLARS by emerging artist Josh Cobb-Diamond supported by the Fringe festival explores the relationship between materiality and space through architectural sculptures. Despite the lack of air-conditioning, I was distracted by the delicate beauty of the sculptures which sold out super fast! Yay for Perth’s supportive arts community! Free Range is officially on my radar!

What a wonderful space! Not just because it’s filled with gorgeous art, but because it’s a not for profit, volunteer organisation, run by artists and arts administrators, who are focused on operating as an independent gallery. There has been exhibitions on and off at the gallery for a long time, but now it’s permanently open with works showing all year round. Exhibitions vary from showcasing local to national artists, so if you’re looking for an affordable exhibition, performance or project space within a supportive network then these are your guys!
