Chophouse first set up shop in Sydney and around six months ago opened a Perth outlet in the refurbished Cloisters Arcade at the top of St Georges Terrace. It has a lovely open area at the front, shaded by a large Moreton Bay fig tree, while inside there are two more areas — one up and one down — for eating and drinking. The outside area — obviously very popular — was quite full when we stopped in for lunch so away from the Madding crowd we sat inside, downstairs just along from the bar with a view of the open kitchen. The menu is, reasonably, geared towards meat although there are certainly options for both fish eaters and vegetarians. And the wine list has a good range of wines from Australia and overseas — with a little more emphasis on red than white — again which seems reasonable in view of the food on offer. We, as many will know is our want, settled on a bottle of rosé — 2014 Mitolo«The Jester» from McLaren Vale; made from sangiovese this has a ripe fruit nose redolent of raspberries with a touch of mint, while the palate is soft, very dry, with good acidity supporting the juicy cherry and strawberry flavours. We started with a shared salad of cured, hot smoked trout, tender and juicy, with bitter crisp frisee leaves, toasted walnuts adding a toasty and nutty crunch, mildly pickled cucumber and apple, and splashed with a sharp, acidic buttermilk dressing and a dash of oil; this was a top notch salad and we felt quite virtuous when we had finished. For our mains, Lady FWO opted for a 180g Wagyu fillet — pan fried — melt in your mouth tender and cooked to her order of medium, with a little pink at its juicy centre. On the other hand, I ordered pan roasted Gold Band snapper — lovely crisped skin and moist, succulent flesh — sitting on a splodge of zesty salsa verde and a sprinkle of peppery cress. Both were excellent dishes — well-presented and very well cooked, indicative of the care and attention paid to the food at Chophouse. Friendly service, great location, all round an excellent choice for our lunch and the crowd at lunchtime is evidence of its justified popularity. We will be back…

Can’t explain how much I loved my meal here! But I’ll try because that’s the point of reviews. Great atmosphere & décor friendly warm greeting Quickly shown to a great table with a great view and ridiculously comfy chairs Excellent waitstaff who offered us water. Then came back to take drink orders(the delay was very helpful considering the length of the list) delicious fresh, warm bed and real butter that was soft and easily spreadable. Mains arrived in a reasonable amount of time The steak was cooked to perfection — medium rare all the way through even in the thicker parts near the bone Amazing potato purée(mash for those cooking at home) Great green veggie sides Best Waygu beef burger ever. Hands down. Amazing. Will return for that. Desserts were amazing too — popcorn brittle semi fredo and a lemon tart(they even added candles as it was our birthdays — nice touch) In conclusion, with great staff and food without fault I will absolutely go back — and suggest that you come with me so that we can order the tomahawk(serves a minimum of 4). In the lead up to attending I had a few friends tell me it was expensive — not in my opinion. Consider the food and service quality and it was great value for money! Loved it. Will be back soon!

Chop house– wow Some of the best meat I have had in Perth! We ordered the tomahawk to share and it was cooked to perfection. We also ordered oysters to start which were pretty incredible. The staff there are also extremely helpful friendly and awesome people. A similar style to Rockpool but in my opinion much better — both in terms of food and value for money. Will definitely back!

Had lunch at the chophouse for the second time(my boss loves it) can’t say I do. As a vegetarian it doesn’t offer anything but the location. There is one vege salad but it uses a very bitter lettuce as the base which I personally don’t like. The mash potato is really good and the deserts aren’t bad. The staff were polite but the service on both occasions has been slow, luckily we weren’t in a hurry. They have a fish option which one of the group tried, it was almost inedible. The others enjoyed their meat dishes but commented that it is ‘hit and miss’.

An exquisite culinary experience ! First impression of the menu was underwhelming which was based on it’s simplicity and seemly high prices… Although it did not disappoint, the food was executed to absolute perfection. We did wait 50 minutes for our dinner, but it was worth the wait. Watching the other patrons meals arrive kept us motivated in the meanwhile. The food presentation is lovely. We both ordered the special, a 200g fillet sirloin, cooked medium, which came with truffle hinted butter($ 36). We shared a salad and a side. Shoe string fries($ 9.50) were up there with the best I’ve had… I usually prefer thick cut chips although these were amazing! The cauliflower, goats cheese, almond and cranberry salad was fresh and well balanced($ 21). Accompanied by a nice glass of Pinot Noir, the meal was nothing short of impressive. Contemplating a dessert, we almost gave it a miss since we were so satisfied, although the waiter suggested if we were to have one, that the ‘popcorn butter semifreddo’($ 12.90) was a top choice. So we decided to go ahead share it… And WOW was he right!!! This dessert is incredible, such interesting yet basic flavors and texture — it was perfect. The waiter also ended up knocking the dessert cost off the menu, and when we asked why, he responded with, «well why not??!» :) Upstairs ambiance is cosy and elegant with very dim eclectic style lighting… possibly slightly too dark though — depending on your preference. All in all, a great surprise. Chop House Perth certainly nailed the meaning of the phrase ‘under promise and over deliver’. Will definitely be returning here again soon, this place is a new favorite.

Average, on every level. I was here last night, with a party of seven. A mutual acquaintance of ours was taking a holiday from an overseas posting, and we’d booked a few days in advance to avoid any disappointment. Booking for the group wasn’t too much of an issue, but strangely we were advised that they needed the table back 2hrs after our booking started. I felt this was a little odd, especially considering that when we arrived at least 30% of the tables upstairs were empty, and it was much the same when we left. The quality and food service was above average, and they were afflicted with the usual issue of sides needing to be ordered separately which is the case for most steakhouses who consider themselves higher end. Sadly, whilst the meat was great, the sides really let them down. None of us could understand their seeming fascination over burning the top of what was a very average cauliflower gratin, which was seemingly lacking in the cheesy flavour of Gruyère that the dish promised, but was nowhere to be seen or tasted when consumed. From a smell perspective, the real highlight for me was a new item on the dessert menu — the name of which I can’t even remember how to spell. It could be best described as a very tasty and fragrant doughnut, and the smell was delicious. Half of the orders for it at our table were because of the smell wafting over from a nearby table when theirs arrived. However, in a case of send me to heaven, then I’ll send you to hell when it comes to what goes up your nose — the smells of varnish and paint still lingered in the air. You would have thought these would have dissipated considering the venues been open nearly three months, but this wasn’t the case. Towards the end of the evening, as the dining crowd began to thin out, the majority of our table was being hit by these pungent smells. Pretty much the last thing you need to smell after what was an ok meal. No kinks in the service — both in speed and attentiveness, save for a single wrong drink which is easily forgivable; and their September discount(1, 2, Free) on selected drinks and desserts depending on what you’ve ordered saves a few dollars for larger groups. Significant investment had been made in the décor, and it had a good overall look and feel. Overall, I wasn’t inspired by this place. It isn’t somewhere that I want to rush back and dine at again any time soon. Good tip: Credit card surcharge here is low, only 1%, which is much easier on the wallet compared to other dining establishments around town.

I typically try to give the benefit of the doubt at new locations but Chop House missed the mark on many levels so I felt I needed to advise people of my experiences. I’ll start with the good which there is much; fantastic looking venue, very atmospheric and could have a real vibe in the right night in both the front bar and upstairs restaurant; menu has all the basics covered so good foundations. That however was were it ended for me; after entering when the place was only half full we had no less than four waiters look at us at the door and walk by, one even asked if we had been looked after before leaving never to be seen again — not a warm welcome when you wait 10 minutes in the cold door way. Next the waitress who was super pleasant had too many tables to look after so would disappear for 10 – 15 minutes at a time; which especially sucks when she has both your sparkling water and wine stored away somewhere — leading to having empty glasses half the night. The steak which was ordered medium-rare came out medium-well; which is either an oversight or if the chefs preferences this we should have been advised. However if they can make just a few minor improvements it could be a great venue but right now I could not recommend it for food; it is a good after work drinks location however.

You know things are about to go downhill when the«floor manager» demands to know if you have ever worked in a restaurant before due to the fact you queried an additional service fee of over $ 80 on your bill. Our group organised a birthday dinner at Chophouse for Saturday night, the booking process alone was horrendous, backwards and forward though Sydney office for over a week before we were confirmed. We were told we would have to choose from a set menu due to the size of our group(which was originally booked for 16 however we had 5 cancellations). The set menu consisted of 4 or 5 main options, chips and salad for the table and chocolate and cheese boards for dessert. The steak I ordered was cooked well, the ‘salad’ consisted of some lettuce leaves doused in dressing and dessert was two varieties of chocolate and three different of cheeses. There were some good drink specials on offer which is nice to see in a restaurant. When we came to pay the night took a turn for the worse, we had our first bill whisked away with no explanation and replaced with a significantly more expensive one which we queried and were told(in not the most polite manner) that it was because large groups get charged an additional service fee, ummmmmmmmmmmmm what extra service did our table receive, I wouldn’t say that 11 people having 4 or 5 things to choose from on a menu required any extra service. A table of 5 would have received more complex service when ordering individual entrees, mains and desserts from the a la carte menu. The additional service fee was removed from our bill after a lengthy discussion, during which we were told we should have also been charged $ 50 for the people in our group who cancelled; I cannot see how this is justifiable when the food should be cooked to order not pre-prepared. The whole experience ruined what was, up until it came time to pay our bill, a great evening. There are plenty of other restaurants in Perth that serve great steak, fantastic service and won’t charge you an exorbitant fee to eat in a group so I would recommend you visit one of those instead of Chophouse.

Nestled under a grand old tree, the alfresco is going to be one of this summer’s favourite after work haunts. Being a little nippy we headed indoors and upstairs where we treated to a cosy, warmly lit room. The walls and finishings made you feel as if you were dining in one of the exuberant rooms aboard the Titanic. Chophouse is essentially a fine-dining steakhouse with an exceptional wine-list to match. Their menu offers cuts of various sizes and flavours to cater for most meat-lovers. Their daily specials are also worth enquiring about as well as I can assure you the Chefs will not disappoint. Staff are well trained and will expertly run you through the options of satisfying one’s appetite in the most delightful way. We were thoroughly impressed with all of the flavours our meals delivered. Only wish we could have had a good red to match however it was a work-day lunch. What a delight to have access to quality steaks and ubër-attentive service right in the heart of the CBD.

Came here for a work dinner and I wasn’t sure what to expect. Must say their steak(medium rare is what I ordered) and chips really blow my mind! So when it was my turn to organize another work dinner(with another group of colleagues), I have suggested this place. Do not miss their truffle shoe string fries.

Beautiful fit out, very nicely done and the whole place had a fantastic atmosphere from the minute we walked through the door. Every single staff member was really friendly from the guy on the door, the bar staff and the waiters and waitresses. We sat upstairs which was really busy and had a nice warm cosy feel to it with a nice amount of chatter without being overly noisy. Originally seated towards the back of the restaurant I found it a little too dark(maybe a few more candles or soft lighting needed as it looks a bit flat) and they happily moved us towards the front, which I found much better but I’m fussy about lighting! Our waiter(James) was exceptional, so friendly and clearly happy to be at work, he promptly took our orders and came back regularly to fill up our wine. The food took quite a while to arrive which wasn’t a problem for us as we weren’t in any hurry, he also bought us some complimentary bread to keep us going. To be honest there was nothing jumping out on the menu to me; I was looking for a steak but all of the steaks other than the minute steak were just too large so I opted for the double double lamb chops. I like my meat rare and the waiter noted this on my order, when they arrived they were rare right in the middle but not cooked perfectly all the way through, still quite tasty though. The sides were nice although my hubby wasn’t impressed that the selection of greens comprised of green beans, broccoli that were nice but also dreaded brussel sprouts! Excellent wine selection, the red was served at the perfect temperature and all up we had a really nice experience for a restaurant that has only been open a few weeks. We will be back again, although I’d like to see something different on the menu or even some daily specials, as the lack of choice is probably something that would stop us from returning more often. Good work overall though, there is a nice outdoor seating area overlooking the terrace so I would imagine it will nice sitting out there on a warm day!

Newly opened, so deserves some benefit of the doubt right? Food(when it arrived) was really good and the steak was cooked nicely. However, service was way too slow. Slow to take drinks, slow to bring drinks, slow to take order and slow to deliver… was over an hour for food to arrive from sitting down. Food is worth it… if you’ve got the time!

Went here for lunch with a work colleague during the week and it was fantastic. Could not fault the food, service, décor, atmosphere. Extremely impressed with this new offering to the Perth CBD, and can’t wait to return soon! The outside bar area also looked inviting for after work drinks so I will be sure to check that out too. Highly recommended.

Don’t give this one the chop! As we had something to celebrate this evening we thought we would head on down to one of the new establishments in the city for a bite and something to drink. Chophouse has only been open since last Thursday but was already packed to the brim on our arrival. We managed to get a table through their online booking service without any dramas and were promptly seated on our arrival in the upstairs dining area. I would describe the décor as classy yet casual as there is a choice of indoor and outdoor dining on offer. We decided to start with a shared entrée of scotch egg washed down with some cocktails. Our poison for tonight was the French Cherry Sour and the Sazerac. Whilst both vastly different drinks, these both appeals to our differing tastes nicely. We both agreed that the scotch egg was delicious and a great start to the night. Consisting of duck egg, seeds and spices and a crispy vegetable nest this dish hit the spot. It was just a pity that it did take a while for this dish to come out and at this stage whilst we had been given water were still waiting for our initial cocktail offer. Service was very friendly but unfortunately not faultless as waiting seems to be the name of the game here, the staff were extremely apologetic, and whilst this is nice, it would have been nicer if the drinks had just been brought out in time. The bar manager was quite professional in this as we had actually cancelled the cocktail order in fear of it coming at the same time as our order of wine to go with our mains. The cocktails were still brought out and offered on the house as an apology for their lateness. For mains we decided on Crumbed Pork Chop with hazelnut and herb crumbs and apple sauce and the dry aged Delmonico striploin on the bone with chutney and jus. Both dishes came out together(always a good thing) along with our glasses of red. The pork chop was stated as being cooked medium well done and the striploin as medium rare. In fact the pork was a little closer to well done and the striploin closer to rare than what they should have been. A little off the mark here but all the flavours were still on queue. All in all for a place that has only been open since Thursday, the usual teething problems are present but don’t let detract from you trying out a place that has plenty of promise and and a good atmosphere on a Friday night.
