After disappointing experiences with chicken burgers in other fast food restaurants I was optimistic to sink my teeth into some Red Rooster — a bastion of Australian fast food. Sadly, though, I was disappointed. The first impression I got of the place was one of inefficiency as I was kept waiting in the drive-through lane for quite some time despite being the only person in it. The attendant was friendly and helpful, but she seemed to not quite be up to scratch with English usage. This was a little annoying as questions had to be repeated and it was a little hard to understand her. The drive-through lane itself was a little too narrow for comfort. Eventually I got home and un-wrapped my food. The chips were probably the best part of this meal as they were quite tasty and seasoned to go with chicken. Although the seasoning was pleasant, it wasn’t on all of the chips. About half were quite bland, actually. It was like the most disappointing game of heads and tails ever played. The crispy strips were pleasantly spicy but otherwise forgettable. While their consistency was rather nice they largely lacked flavour and seemed to be there for no other reason than to make the meal look bigger. Like the crispy strips, my burger was spicy. And, like the crispy strips, my burger was bland. The taste that dominated the burger was that of the bun, followed by the lettuce and then the mayonnaise. The only thing that alerted me to the presence of the chicken was the spice. Out of the entire burger, I only enjoyed the last two bites. It would appear that, despite being a chicken place, Red Rooster’s chicken is just as disappointing as regular fast food chicken. The only good things about this meal were the spice and the drink that hadn’t been watered down. 2 stars.
