There are two Asakaze in Parramatta Westfield. This one is in the food court on Level 5. Plenty of places to sit and plenty of other restaurants to choose from too. There is another Asakaze downstairs in Level 1. We tried one of the hot dishes and it was OK. The beef was not available so we settled for one prawn and one sushi. It could be described as a salad on rice with a mildly hot plum sauce. It also came with miso soup served in a takeaway container with a dessert spoon. The miso was based on the powder and not the paste. It was more expensive than the small non chain type Japanese so I think I will give Asakaze a miss in preference to those in future.

They’re right by the train station, so get a lot of walkthrough traffic methinks. Lots of these around, and their handrolls are about average for food hall takeaway type sushi. Staff were nice when I popped in for something a bit more substantial the other day, putting my ‘eat in’ sushi box on a bento tray and giving me real chopsticks. The salmon sushi was ok, if a bit too cold, leaving me unable to really get much of the real taste of the fish. But they do have a few tables and a counter so you can sit down away from the crowds, for which I was grateful.

I’m not sure if I don’t like Asakaze, or if I just don’t like Japanese food. I think maybe I just don’t like Asakaze. I have had sushi before(not VERY often, but a few times), and it did take a little getting used to at first. I probably shouldn’t have started with the raw salmon. But it grew on me, and I can even enjoy a nice sushi roll now. Until… Asakaze. Now I just don’t know what all the fuss about this place is in aid of. They have a sushi train, as well as a main menu that you can order off, which is nice, but pretty standard, as far as I’m aware. That, and I did not like their smoked salmon sushi roll. The salmon tasted rubbery, the rice was cluggy, and the seaweed tasted of what I imagine pesticide would taste like. Also, the staff aren’t the best communicators, nor the friendliest. But that may or may not be a cultural disparity, who knows. All in all, I think I prefer Sushi Bay.
