Generous serving of chips. Had the onion rings and they better these themselves. Very busy spot but the staff seem very organised. Good range of menu items and offer veggie as well as gluten free. Looked very clean and tables available both inside and out. Not too greasy either which is also a bonus.

So I stepped of the 86 tram on the way to Terra Madre but didn’t want to risk shopping while hungry so I dropped in to this great suburban fish and chips shop. Its the sort of place where you can get a piece of battered fish and a generous serve of crisp and crunchy chips rapped in paper for just over $ 10. What I found most interesting was that this place also offered gluten free options, though only at non-peak times, but I thought the consideration for their customers was worth noting. Like any good fish and chip shop, there is a selection of fish and seafood to choose from plus those little sweet extra’s such as banana and pineapple fritters. Yum.

A few months back I was accosted by a very drunk and talkative bogan from Eltham outside of Westgarth fish and chips. He insisted on telling me long and arduously why he had travelled all the way from the outer suburbs to eat at said take-away shop. He swore black and blue that Westgarth Fish and Chips did the best chips, the freshest fish and the best kebabs in all of Melbourne. While I seriously question this drunks state of mind and flat out disagree with all of the assertions he made — Westgarth Fish and Chip shop ain’t that bad at all. It was recently taken over by new owners who promptly and bizarrely redecorated the tasteful and rather gourmet looking Fish shop into the typical red and yellow souvlaki style joint. The upside of this is the fact that they started serving souvlaki’s, of which, I am a massive fan. But then again, they are only open until 9pm even on weekends. And honestly, who in their right mind wants a souvlaki at such a respectable hour.

Strange but true: I’ve eaten more kebabs in my eight months in Melbourne than I did in eight years in London and despite the fact that Westgarth Fish and Chips make nowhere near the best souvlaki in Melbourne — hell, they’re probably not even in the top fifty percent — this popular little high street chippy is a big part of that fact. Salty, greasy chicken? Tick! Fresh crunchy lettuce? Tick! A generous slathering of some damn fine tsatsiki? Tick! No qualms about holding the tomato and onion? No, not even a quibble? Tick, tick! Westgarth Fish and Chips is awesome. My favourite thing about Westgarth Fish and Chips? Its hugely good value Souvlaki Meal Deals consisting of any souvlaki, a hearty portion of — very, very good — fries — I’m talking, very, very good — and a drink for a measly $ 10.50. You can’t go wrong with that.
