I think about New Moon whenever we’re apart — so I know its true love. There’s a good reason people are always lining out the front for a table at this yum cha joint. It’s so dang tasty and soooo cheap. It’s also BYO. So, basically it’s a big part of most of my nights spent in Northbridge. The place looks a bit like a gaudy karaōke joint with lots of glitzy chandeliers, coloured LED lighting and bedaddled walls. It’s awesome. Service is good — and they waterboard you with food as soon as you sit down. They’re also really accommodating with big groups and walk-ins. The food is the best — make sure to order the crispy fried squid, pork puns, juicy pork dumplings and custard buns. And anything else on the cart that takes your fancy — it’s all great. There isn’t much available for veggos, unfortunately. Luckily — I’m not one of them.

Delicious yum Cha in the heart of Northbridge! BYO meant that a group of friends and I ate a feast and paid under $ 30 per person. All food was fresh and service was fantastic.

I really enjoy this yum Cha place. It’s always bumping but they always seem to find you a table. Service is quick and the food is hot and delicious from the cart. This is a good place for yum-Cha rookies to get a taste of a range of dishes.

After craving Dim Sum for weeks I finally found myself in Northbridge at lunch time and popped into New Moon for a spot of late lunch. The menu is very extensive and the yum cha trolleys are constantly on patrol with food that makes it very hard not to order everything. As per usual we ordered waaaay too much food and almost had to be rolled out of the restaurant. The highlights were definitely the deep fried squid tentacles and the sticky BBQ pork buns but everything was very tasty. The deep fried dough caught my interest but turned out to be a bit of a disappointment. They were exactly as the name suggests and were just like bland, savoury donuts. New Moon definitely satisfied my Dim Sum craving(for now) and I will definitely be returning next time the feeling creeps up on me.

25÷9÷15 Yes, another craving led me here. I can’t explain how awesome it is to have dimsum at night. I ordered all my favourites except for the rice flour rolls(I didn’t see any :(). I liked the soup dumplings so much I had extras. I call them the fun dumplings. Dip em in the red vinegar and pop em in your mouth! Take a bite and splatter the soup within! Pow! I ate so much tonight I had to be rolled to the car. Oh the flakey goodness of the custard tarts! I wanted more but my belly said ‘sorry no more room!’. No more room for even some mango pudding :(It’s ok I’ll get some next time.

It took us a while to get the hang of the ordering — they just come around with trolleys of dim sums each size dictates a certain price. Awesome fun and like being in Hong Kong! Food and dim sums were amazing and so so so yummy! Can’t wait to return already planning another night out.

Delicious dumplings, pork buns and fried goodness. Best cure for a hangover. The service is fast although some of the staff not very onto it… clearly we had more dumplings then we could eat and they just kept coming and harassing us whilst we were eating. I also was a little annoyed that the waitress kept leaning over me to give the table next to us food when there was another side she could have served from. Probably the best dim sum in North Bridge and will definelty be going back for more Sunday Dim Sum. Always a long line on Sunday’s but worth the wait.

Had the century egg and pork congee, braised beef tendon and the shanghai dumplings, all was very good. Haven’t been here for a couple of years and I’m glad it’s as I remember it. Worth trying out

Although, I promised myself that one day I will ransack Asia for all its dim sum places, in the meantime I try them wherever I can. New moon is apparently the best place to have them in Perth — as told by some of our asian friends met along our travelling journey. I won’t say they were the best one I’ve had but for the price they were quite good. The dumplings with broth in them are my favourite(watch out it can be very hot) and if you dare you can even try some chicken feet. You can easily stuff your face with many different things for under 20 $ per person :-) The service is so swift you’d feel they want you out as quickly as possible(but no, really, why would you think that?!) and sometimes the waiting staff’s english is worst than your cantonese(I can say«soap», does that count?) but I guess it’s all part of the dim sum experience…

Mmm I love Dim Sum. We went on a Sunday at bout 1pm. It was really busy but only had to wait about 15 minutes. Inside it was SOOO loud. The food was amazing but yeah the service was a bit annoying. I had to ask 3 times for a drink I had ordered(a can of coke). The staff bringing around the food though were nice and described everything they had. The price was reasonable as well, we ate so much we couldn’t fit in anymore and it came to under $ 40.

Recommended by my Chinese girlfriend(not a Unilocaler) to try this place as I have always patronized another yum Cha place. New moon is fabulous if you can get in. Didn’t know what they are taking about when the«queue» word was mentioned. Was there at 11:30am, got seated straightaway. Then immediately served tea. Ummm they didn’t ask what kind of tea I wanted(which was unusual). Usually they ask what kinda Chinese tea you wanted or preferred. Ordered a couple of my usual favorites. All turned out really good. Really tasty. Service was excellent. Ordered a takeaway & server didn’t forget. By the time I’m finished with yum Cha, he took my order out. Now I totally understand what queues people were talking about. 12:30pm is the time I left New Moon… The queue was a few meters long. What’s not to like? The food is great & don’t leave me thirsty(side effects of MSG). Obviously they are either not using it or very little amounts in their food. The missing one star is the place tries to put as many tables as possible to allow more customers… BUT, the steam cart is going around with tight corners, then there’s prams everywhere. Safety seems to be an issue. That’s my only concern. Will definitely return & would gladly recommend all my friends to try New Moon :)

Where else can you go if you crave for delicious yum cha night? Yep, this one is the place to go. The first time I went there, I then declared them to be my new favourite yum cha place. I would wait out the front for as long as it takes to eat here because they serve beautiful chinese steamed and deep fried dishes. Yum — those dough rice flour roll, chicken feet, pork dumpling, custard bun and so many more I can’t even describe no more. Dip those in the chilli oil, it’s almost like I’m hypnotised every time it hits me. But remember to always check the paper whenever you order them, one time I was overcharged only because the staff wasn’t sure whether they’d had crossed it or not. Don’t think twice when you walk pass. Press push, tell them how many of you and they’ll take you there.

The best yum cha in Perth at the minute. They are always so fast to the table with the trolleys just to make sure you get our dumpling fix as quick as possible. My favourites have to be the Shanghai Pork dumplings and the deep fried squid tentacles. They may not be the healthiest lunch options going but who cares, this stuff is just delicious! I always find myself getting stuffed much sooner than expected and I have yet to make it all the way as far as the egg tarts but they look gorgeous! The bill comes to much less than expected every time. It gets pretty busy at lunch times on the weekend so make sure to get in early if you are in desperate need of some dumpling goodness.

Oh, but I love me some dim sum. Kind of weird not eating it hungover though. Maybe that’s a Sydney thing? Eh, whatever, just gimme dumprings. There was chilli salt and pepper squid on the table almost as soon as we sat down, it’s like New Moon knew we were coming. Wait. Did New Moon know we were coming? Is someone spying on us just like the Australian Govt has been spying on Indonesia’s PM and his family, as I just heard on Triple j News like 2 minutes ago? There’s no way to be sure, but I just slipped that in so I could have an excuse to say ‘but I digress’, one of my favourite phrases because it makes me sound smart an’ stuff. Dumplings were great, we begged off chicken feet and some of the more exotic creations. Despite numerous requests they forgot my chilli sauce(a must-have) and the green tea we ordered a couple of times never made it either. Man down. MANDOWN!

Ohhhh so this is why people wait out the front for an hour for a table. The food is delicious, with a super wide range available, and you definitely won’t be left waiting for service, they are relentless with their delivery of steaming baskets at your table. They have all your favourites. We ate like kings(fat kings) for $ 25 a head. Though this is probably my favourite dim sum spot in Perth at the moment, I think the custard tarts are better at Xintiandi.

A mark of a good Chinese restaurant I think is the house chili oil. Chili oil to Chinese is what complimentary bread is to a French restaurant. New Moon have built a recipe for a deep flavoured spicy oil that has an unpredicted crunch. Between three of us we drained about nine serves of the stuff. Couldn’t get enough! As the routine goes at any worthy dim sum joint, the room is hustling in disorderly order. Things move rapidly and orders are hollered across the room. High turnover means dumplings appear in shimmering, steaming, joyous freshness. I’m not exactly the authority on a quality dumpling like I am say on cake or ice cream(I have only had a handful of yum cha experiences in my day) but these guys impressed me most. I heart the comforting fluffy pork buns(Char Siu Bao). Sweet shreds of Chinese barbecued pork, snuggled inside a pillowy bun. I had to gobble two. Prawn Coriander dumplings were also le goods. The parcels were packed with hearty chunks of sweet prawns and chopped herbs, with little stodge. Fried Chili Squid Tentacles were a tad on the tough side, but I don’t think I’ve ever tried any that weren’t. I’m not usually an Asian dessert wooer but the silky Egg Custard Tarts were perfect! The flaky pastry split in a pinch when I divided it with a chopstick. And those golden sunny centers. Yerrmm. 8 bamboo baskets and endless tea filled three of us up for just under $ 16. Great-value fresh dim sum means that weekend queues are a norm. I ran into a(hungover) friend who had been waiting over an hour(ouch!). VIP-it and book ahead. You’ll be the object of dim sum die-hard envy!

My friends and I have always been going to the same place for Yum Cha until we recently decided to be a little more daring and try somewhere new. Last time, we hit Welcome Inn(see previous review — blah) and today, it was New Moon’s turn. I don’t think we need to try anywhere else. This place is fab. New moon has not long been open, but has already gathered a decent clientele, meaning if you want to get a table in the tiny establishment, you are going to have to forgo the sleep in on Sunday. We got there at 9:45am and there were only a few tables left. Within 15 mins(when I could drag my attention away from the food in front of me) there was a line outside. It’s that good a place. My friend, let’s just call him The Pork Bun Aficionado, reckons the steamed buns here are on par with our usual place. My other friend, let’s just call her Tiny But Sure Can Put Food Away, is in love with the steamed egg yolk buns. Me? Don’t like all that stodgy stuff, gimme steamed dumplings all the way. We also had the chilli, salt and pepper squid and the fried soft shell crab — both wonderful. My new favourite is the Shanghai Pork dumplings. Tiny little twisted domes of minced pork sitting in, within the tiny dome, a stock soup. My tip is to use your chopstick to make a little vent adjacent to the twist, tip in a splash of the orange coloured vinaigrette that comes with them. Pop one of those babies, whole, in to your mouth, push up with your tongue and *BAM* a sensational explosion of flavour! A little dumpling orgasm. You’ll thank me for it. Trust me on that score. I’d say between us, we had about 12 plates plus Chinese tea. All up, $ 60. Too busy eating to take more pics, sorry.
