The food was decent, some interesting pizza combinations. However this place really failed in my eyes, when 3 of us decided to dine there on the spur of the moment on a very hot summers day. The waiters were friendly enough, but despite the place being entirely empty they insisted that the restaurant was full & that we must sit outside at a table in front of the place on the street. In the 45 minutes that we were there the place was extremely far from full, perhaps a few people came in after 30 minutes, and even then there were ample tables available. Had they told us that we could have a table if we would be done in 40 minutes that would have been acceptable, but they said no such thing. Seeing as the venue was almost empty for 45 minutes, I can assume we were selfishly placed on the street to make the restaurant seem busy & attract more customers. The food may have hit the spot, but the customer service was lacking.

Really awesome restaurant! Food comes super fast and is fresh and delicious. Only downsides are that its super loud inside and you can’t hear the person next to you talking if it’s busy. Also the waiters are all in casual clothing so it’s a bit hard to tell who actually works there! Great pizza though! Really creative names on the menu. I’ve tried the fun guy pizza and it was delicious, although I probably needed a magnifying glass to spot the pear on the pizza(tiny tiny pieces, almost non-existent). Chocolate fondant for dessert is to die for! You get two on a plate and oh my god, they’re delicious. Definitely recommend trying!

Finally got the chance to try out Tony’s Tomatoes. so glad I did! This place offers a slice of Italy in our very own O’Connell St in North Adelaide. The restaurant has a great vibe with tables and seating arrangements to suit everyone’s needs; individual and sharing tables, high chairs or bar sitting. The aromas coming from the open kitchen bring you to the streets of Italy, further enhanced by the Italian staff who are joyful and happy to chat! The menu is playful with a few pizza names giving us a laugh or two(jenny Craig special anyone!) We started the night with Italian polpete(meatballs) which brought me back to my nonnas homemade meatballs as well as my favourite; asparagus arancini — perfecto! We then shared the prosciutto pizza and the vedura pizza on wholemeal bases — light & crispy! The toppings were fresh and were just enough for the size of the pizzas! Very well priced — ended up being $ 35 pp including a bottle of vino rosso!

I don’t bother writing reviews unless they are really good or really bad. This one is really good, and it ain’t a fluke, this was my third trip… Why? Booking: They got it right and were more than accommodating of 2 high chairs. Staff: Quick, knowledgeable, friendly and attentive Atmosphere: It’s a busy resturant, given that, it was not too loud, and not cramped. Service: Fast. These guys don’t mess around, you order, they provide. Food: This is what it’s all about. We had ; Pork and Veal Polpette — perfect texture and traditional flavour, Tomato ragu which covered them was well cooked, sometimes a tomato sauce can be under cooked and still have some fresh tomato taste behind it, not this one, it had cooked a long time and was perfect for the meat balls. Pork Rib Eye Tagliata — The only dish that took a while to come out, but worth the wait. Cooked to perfection on the bone and served with an Apricot and Mango Chutney, crispy thin onion rings and a secret recipe mustard(they wont give that mustard recipe away) Each individual component on its own packed a flavour punch, and when combined on your fork and delivered to your taste buds… Oh yeah. White Bait(special) — It’s whitebait, simple in it’s own right, easy to get wrong, but they didn’t. My 2 year old son Loved these! Asparagus Arancini — Whoever made these didn’t just poke some cheese and asparagus into a ball of rice and crumb it before throwing it in the fryer. No — first they made a risotto which was perfect in its own right, then they added the rest once the rice was perfect. Prawns — Pan fried to perfection with cherry tomatoes and garlic. Need I say more than prawns and garlic? Served on a bed of black rice, which was wasted on me, but hey, I’m just not a black rice guy. Salame Pizza — Look, if you like pizza the way Italian pizza is supposed to be(if you’re not sure what I mean, then go to Naples and find out) then it doesn’t matter which pizza you order here. This pizza is how it is in Italy. I hear people say they want more toppings, well, in that case, go to Dominoes or Pizza Hut and don’t spend your precious money on a proper pizza at this establishment. Chocolate Fondant — Ordered one(you get two little ones in a serve). Ate it. Ordered another one. Enough said? Tira mi su — Ever had a bad tira mi su or an average one? This tira mi su will make you forget those average ones and have you licking the generous sized bowl. This place gets busy, so book. Don’t expect to walk in and get a seat unless you are getting in early or late. Go forth and eat, fellow foodies.

You know those times when a few days later you find yourself thinking about the dinner that was so good? This is one of those few places for me. For pizza with fresh and plentiful toppings this is a great place to go. The bases are freshly cooked and have that rustic homemade look(which I love). So many choices and the staff are very welcoming and helpful with menu recommendations. We had two entrees and two pizzas to share with four people and that was plenty. The menu has changed since some fellow Unilocalers have been so I will upload new pictures. The drinks menu was fantastic. Plenty of wines and some great looking cocktails. I only had a Tuscan Dew this time, it was amazing. I will definitely be coming back with some other friends and to try other cocktails.

Tony Tomatoes has a nice looking menu, great beers and from the look of it, great cocktails. The only thing letting them down in my opinion is the pizza. I was expecting something special, but all three pizzas we ordered were below generic Italian café standard. Two of them came on square bases which looked pre-cooked and were more like Turkish bread than pizza bases. The third was on super thin base and was quite oily with low quality ingredients. I will give the place another try in the future though as it may have just been our choices or a bad night. The atmosphere and décor are great so hopefully it will be a better experience next time.

This place is ok. The pizza is good but I have had better. The atmosphere is alright and is located at quoted end of O’Connell St so easier to park. The gentleman greeting you is very rude and brash. Did not like him at all. In fact almost left because of his attitude. He was very annoyed we hadn’t booked. it’s a pizza place! This with make me try plenty other places around before I return here(if I return)

Pleasantly surprised. From the outside this place looks like a chain, uncompromising, non-engaging, braced to deal with large numbers, meh… Staff are nice, and on a Tuesday evening, quite relaxed and pleasant place. Pizzas are quite good, 1/person is probably the standard. Mushroom and prosciutto was a winner! House wine(at least the white) was fantastic for its price. Will keep this place in mind for the future.

Came in for an early dinner and was lucky to get the last table! The Stones playing later might have has something to do with this! A friendly and quirky guy gave us some ex. Sicilian olives & took our order. Two of the more ‘basic’ pizzas & a ½ litre of Sangiovese Shiraz. You gotta love a pichet– so euro! The pizzas didn’t take long(Margherita & salame) and they were thin crust beauties — just the right amount of topping. Could have been in Rome. Highly recommended!

Very modern Italian… starters to wet our appetite consisted of arrosticini with rocket salad, lentil salad with roasted almonds(so yummy) and spaetzle in a creamy pork sauce, and now my main course of pizza Margherita!

Being a friend of Ruby Red Flamingo, we had high hopes for Tony and he didn’t disappoint! On a warm Friday night, we ran the gauntlet to get a table(as we were under the booking minimum), but we were able to get one outside with no wait. Drink orders were placed only minutes later, kick starting the fantastic level of service we received all night. Following the ‘sharing is caring ’ ethos of Ruby Red, we ordered the pork and veal polpette and the red radicchio, smoked scamorza cheese and red onion arancini as starters. The polpette were mouth-watering with their rich tomato sugo and the smoky flavour of the scamorza cheese through the arancini was amazing. Being a cheese freak, I decided on the playfully named, Jenny Craig Special in addition to our traditional selection of the prosciutto pizza. We chose the 72 hour special proved base which was a winner providing us with perfectly crisp bases from the wood oven fire. Making our way through the salty, runny goodness of the Jenny Craig, we were delighted with the pops of Gorgonzola. This was complemented by the prosciutto pizza which had a generous amount of freshly sliced prosciutto adorning the cheesy, tomato base with a hint of fresh basil. Tony Tomatoes certainly delivers on food, service and atmosphere. We will definitely add this to our list of regulars.

Tony Tomatoes is a pizza joint with a difference. It’s more upmarket than the usual suburban pizza place and has a few different seating options depending on your preferences. There’s the cozy tables, bar seating or high tables near the wall. The service is really accommodating and the staff explain everything on the menu. I tried one of their cocktails which was nice and zingy — they know their Italian spirits and apertivos and a light cocktail will certainly whet your appetite for the delicious food to come. Although the share plates look good, both times I’ve been I have saved my stomach room for the pizza, which is fantastic. The GF base stands up to it’s gluten-y cousins and the toppings are fantastic and fresh. The 72 hour special is a proved base that is perfectly crispy from the wood fired oven. We had the Salame, which was thin slices of salami, olives and chilli. The chilli packs a punch and the whole pizza was delicious. From the complementary olives to the smell of pizza from the wood oven, Tony Tomatoes has the right atmosphere and the great pizza to back it up.

Like Zoe, we were sent here after not wanting to wait for a table at Ruby Red Flamingo. It turned out to be a great suggestion, and a good promotion for their other restaurant which we didn’t know existed at the time. We were able to get a table with no wait. The restaurant was loud but comforting and warm. We were seated at a high table, which felt a bit precarious, perching on the high bar-stool-style chairs. We shared two pizzas between two people: A Superleggera«Eat My Breast» and a Thick Tony Special«Fun Guy». Two delicious pizzas on opposite ends of the crust thickness spectrum, and just what we needed. Tony Tomatoes have turned pizza into a food for the start of a respectable night out(as opposed to the greasy pizza you eat at the END of a night out ;)) The pizza sizes aren’t so big that you can’t order a few to try the different toppings. And they have a large floor space meaning you’re more likely to get a table on those nights when you haven’t gotten around to booking anything

On a cold, rainy Friday night my group of friends and I headed out for dinner in North Adelaide. With no plans and no bookings we proceeded to try a number of surprisingly busy places. We tried Ruby Red Flamingo, however already being 7.30pm we were kindly told it would be at least an hour wait and were given a free pizza voucher for Tony Tomatoes just around the corner. Approaching Tony’s we were apprehensive as to whether we would get a table considering how busy it looked. There were even people sitting and standing around talking outside, and it was freezing! We were warmly greeted and told they could accommodate our group of 6 with 2 extra people coming later. They quickly cleared a recently vacated table for us. Two of the group are coeliacs and were very pleased with the separate GF pizza selection of 3 or 4 pizzas. My friend claims it was the best GF pizza she has ever eaten! Between the 4 non-coeliacs we shared a couple of delicious serves of arancini and 3 pizzas. We probably could have stopped there but when the 2 extra guests arrived we all shared a couple more pizzas. We all left very satisfied paying $ 30 each(we shared a couple of bottles of wine as well). The place had a great feel to it. It’s big and a bit noisy but with nice ambient lighting and friendly service, it all works. We were very lucky to be seated in front of the open kitchen and were often treated to a show of very skilful pizza base spinning!

Yuuuum. This was good pizza. We shared some arancini balls to start then got 4 pizzas between the 6 of us(3 of the thinner bases and one of thick). Really interesting toppings, great bases, not greasy at all. We were all very full at the end! Reasonable prices, especially considering the quality. We did wake up the next day with very dry mouths though which is always an indicator of quite a salty meal for us. So if they could dial that back a bit then it would be perfect!

We shared two pizzas and arancini balls amongst 3 quite hungry people and it defientely satsified us, without leaving a too full sickly feeling. There is a variety of bases to choose from which I’ve never really come across in Adelaide before, from gluten free, thin crusts & thick crusts. The pizzas were good but they weren’t spectacular enough to have me hurrying back as soon as humanly possible. The staff are very helpful and attentive, just be sure to listen carefully because it gets quite loud when the place is full. Overall a delightful place for dinner but with O’Connell street offering such a great variety of amazing places to eat, I might try somewhere else before heading back here.

Great place to dine with friends or on your own. Very friendly staff. This place certainly makes you feel like you are in Italy. Make sure you try the Arancini Balls. Pizzas are just beautiful and the food does not make you feel bloated.

Really quick service and meal delivery, food that doesn’t make you feel bloated and serves some really interesting and tantalising dishes. It’d be a really great place for family and friends.
