I ordered vegetarian fried rice, it came with a huge piece of pork. I called to tell them as it was takeaway and they were not helpful.

This place is variously named Thai La Ong 2 and Alice’s Thai on the signage. It’s my best Thai place! There’s a couple of staffers who are my particular favourites and sometimes they give me complimentary prawn crackers to go with my takeaway. If they see me walking past the store, going about my business in the wider world, they’ll wave.(I come here a lot.) My favourite dishes are the red curry with tofu, and the cashew nut stir fry with tofu — those two plus a small rice will set you back something like $ 21 if you’re getting them to go in the evening; at lunchtime you can get a main with rice for $ 7. In my neck of the woods Thai restaurants are a dime a dozen so you have to be kinda good to stand out, and recently this place was unexpectedly and horribly closed so I went to the one next door and was very disappointed; the quality just wasn’t the same. The tofu is really terrific at Alice’s! One of my mates is half-Thai and he comes here as well, if that’s any recommendation.

Another confession: you really can’t beat $ 7 Thai lunches. You can’t. During lunchtimes, this place is super packed with uni students and adults working in the area. The fact that they have seating in the front, through the back and upstairs shows you how popular this place is and deservedly so. I’ve had the pad kee Mao(stir fried thick flat noodles with protein of your choice and vegetables) which was served piping hot(just how I like it, nothing like cold food right!) and had good flavour. The rice and fried basil and chilli was a tad sweet for my liking but still decent Thai. The moo ping(grilled pork) served with rice looks and tastes delicious too. The pad see ew and pad Thai are also of a high standard. Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if they started this $ 7 Thai deal thing because they are just bossing it right now!

Oh the dilemma of where to eat when you’re in Newtown! When the choices are too overwhelming, I always go to one place that never disappoints, Thai La Ong II. Yes, I can hear you say what a boring choice, but how can you pass up a reasonably cheap lunch, for $ 7 a meal you get a good eat that the whole family will love. Yes, this may not be your usual 5-star dining experience, but the staff are attentive and with two levels lunching/dining area, there’s plenty of table at anytime of day. What about the food? There’s plenty to choose from, most of your Thai favourites would be on the menu. I always have their Pad See Ew. Their Fried Rice with Vegetables and Fried Egg is also good and generous in size. Yes, while in Newtown I like to go to the hip and trendy places, but sometimes I just want a good eat and great company without having to empty my wallet, and this place fits the bill!

A lovely little local place with some nice cozy ambience. Definitely not upper class fare but a hearty eat that’s not too hard on your pocket. I live the pad see ew and the cashew nut fried rice. We always get a few different appetizers each time to try.

Thai La Ong II(and I and III) go with Newtown like beetroot and egg go with an Aussie Burger! Most people will love it, and those that don’t … Well who cares!!! This place is consistent, well priced, never empty s d never too busy(after all there are THREE Thai La Ong’s for a reason). Food is always good without being phenomenal, staff are always attentive without knowing how to speak Engrish overly well. You expect the same thing every time and you get it — rarely any surprises. Not exactly a ‘birthday party’ or ‘Melbourne Cup’ celebration venue — just s good eat in and then hit up a bar elsewhere typa place. We’ll be back!!! Again!

The choices are endless when it comes to Thai restaurants in Newtown, but the infamous lunch specials first made me a regular of Thai La Ong(one and two) during my uni days. Even though my USYD days are behind me, I still find myself returning here for dinner! The venue is nothing flash(go to the place next door if you are after more ambience), but you will be absolutely guaranteed to have a good cheap feed. The staff was friendly, the food came out quickly and it was tasty and fresh. What more could you ask for?

I am in constant search of reasonably priced BYO restaurants close to trendy bars. Thai La Ong II definitely fits the bill. Initially, a group of friends and myself intended to go to Thai La Ong(I) however the restaurant was unfortunately at capacity. We were surprised to discover that a second Thai La Ong existed but a short walk from the first — a peculiar development. The food itself is very decent and is also tremendous value. The service is definitely no frills, but that’s sometimes how you want it; efficient and direct — there is nothing worse than being smothered with attention by a waiter. Thai La Ong II offers its diners space, quality food and a casual atmosphere. What more could you really want?! What, indeed.

The $ 6.50 lunch is the absolute best thing about this place. Every item is that price and the portions are a decent size. The quality of the food is pretty good too, when considering the price. Ideal for students who are on a tight budget but still want some decent thai food on King street.

I thought I could make it through lunch time without going into a restaurant, I would be home in an hour or so, surely I could wait till then. But, no, slave to my basic survival, I needed food. In order to save money and still to get a delicious meal, seeing as I was near King Street, I would go and find a Thai place with one of those Lunch Special’s that I love so much. I journeyed along King Street, walking past many a Thai Restaurant, some the number one of their brand and some the number two. I see a sign stuck to the inside of the window at Thai La Ong 2 and agree with the sentiment behind it, «$ 6.50 Lunch Special», so I enter. I order at the counter and take a seat. Pad Prik Sod, if my memory serves correct. Something I haven’t had before. Chosen for it’s description which detailed many a vegetable and chilli. The wait is longer than I expected, as there are many a person in the establishment with the same cheap and tasty idea as me. The food comes and it’s delicious and large for $ 6.50. I drink a whole bottle of water and I sit and muse on the meaning of life before I make my exit. I just wanted you to know that.
