Loyalty and sense of value are why we stick with certain products and choices in life. Take iPhone’s for instance, I wouldn’t part with it easily. Android phones surely are able to do a lot more things, and less restrictive, and Windows phones have an(arguably) prettier interface, yet I remain loyal to my iPhone. It’s just better. Cars as well; sure a BMW and a Mercedes may be more reliable, they’re built by Germans; and Toyota’s and Volkswagen’s can be very economical, because we need to save the polar bears. But that doesn’t make me want a Lamborghini or a Range Rover any less. Of course there are better cars, but they’re only better on paper. The list goes on: The Beatles and Grateful Dead are great bands, but they aren’t the Stones; quinoa tastes fine and is good for you but it’s not as good as macaroni cheese; and similarly there are better cafés in Newstead than The Oldstead, but there aren’t. If visiting Newstead, you have an array of options before you: Shucked, Hatch & Co., Tippler’s Tap, The Triffid, La Rotisserie and more. The Oldstead, tucked in amongst the fray of the car dealerships, is easily missed. It doesn’t look much from the outside, and the inside is inexpensive or hipstery. What sets The Oldstead apart from the rest, is it’s affordable and great value for money meals, and friendly service. As well as an array of options for most appetites, from salads to have on the go, to burgers and fries, or perhaps an egg and bacon bagel to start the day. There is always variety as well, with different specials happening almost every day. It doesn’t have the best coffee, or the best eggs benedict, but it doesn’t need to and nor does it pretend to. Out with the wank and in with the reliable, honest faire. It is my hub for food during most of my work week. When you’re next visiting Newstead for lunch, and you may think of going to another cafè. But you won’t, you’ll go to Newstead. Because it’s better.
