Specialties
Lingua Franca is an independent French language school for adults based in Brisbane. We run group, private and specialist (DELF) lessons at our ‘nest’ in Newstead and in other locations around Brisbane. We know everyone’s spare time is precious, so we aim to create a welcoming, engaging and effective environment for you to learn. We also hold quarterly events and occasional overseas trips (Nouméa and Akaroa so far with France on the horizon).
History
Established in 2008.
Lingua Franca Language Services was conceived by Katrina Waugh to fill a gap in the French language learning market. Upon returning from living in Paris, she realised that although many Brisbane-dwellers were keen to learn French, they didn’t necessarily want to learn in a classroom environment, so she initially started offering classes in bookstores and cafés instead.
As the business grew, it became important to have a place to call home, so the ‘nest’ in Newstead was set up. The team at Lingua Franca has been careful to maintain the cosy and relaxed atmosphere of a bookstore/café, as they want the hour or so their students spend with them each week to feel like a treat, not a trial.

Business Owner
Katrina was introduced to French in the same way as many Australians were: at school. She loved it from the minute she learnt her first ‘bonjour’ and went on to study it all the way through high school before majoring in it at university. Her love of French eventually gave her the opportunity to live in Paris and it was upon her return to Australia that she decided to set up an independent French language school. Since its inception in 2008, the school has grown slowly but surely and Katrina now has a small team of native French speakers who are all genuinely passionate about what they do and about giving Lingua Franca students the most support and the best experience possible.
