The success of New Farm’s Little Larder has inspired an offshoot and the result is Larder 2 in Newstead. Little Larder’s charm has been shared with its newer little brother, but Larder 2 differs with a slightly more industrial feel to the interior and more limited trading hours(I assume the café is mainly aimed towards the weekday workers of the area). There is no Sunday trading and the kitchen closes at 11:30 on Saturdays, with the whole café closing by midday. The menu is quite similar to Little Larder, which makes me happy. Unsurprisingly, Larder 2 doesn’t have the buzzing weekend crowd of the Little Larder, but when I sat down for an iced coffee there were several people enjoying a quiet sojourn. It certainly seems like a good place to escape the crowds present at other local cafes(especially on a Saturday), but don’t drag the chain or you could miss out!

Being the 2nd Gen of the Little larder cafes I’ve ended up hearing quite a bit about this place. And while the location is a bit out of the way for me, I’ll most likely pop back here if I’m ever in the Newstead vicinity. Besides the modern décor(Those wooden stools are surprisingly comfy!) What I like about this small spot is the availability of quality all day breakfasts. The simplest breakfast fare of Eggs on Toast was perfectly done and served promptly. (FYI. The gluten free bread is very delicious.) The fruit salad with yoghurt was also fresh, creamy and very refreshing on a brisbane summers morning. Open for breakfast and lunch, this place offers a relaxed and open dining environment and is worth a definite visit when cruising around Commercial Rd.

All day breakfast until 2:30pm? Don’t mind if I do. This cosy little café is squeezed in next to, and is adjoined with, Fusion Cycles and is oozing with character. The bright white space is graffitied with spray painted branches and colourful leaves which twist their way up the walls. It evokes a very back-to-nature feel alongside the chilled ambient music, and is reflected in their house-baked goodies. I opted for a strawberry friande, whilst kicking myself for eating a big breakfast, as their breakfast menu is quite impressive for such a small café. Pesto eggs on toast, eggs Benedict, fruit with muesli and the Larder savoury mince on toast, anyone? The service matches the ambience — the host is bubbly, hopping around the counter to greet you and explain the assortment of sandwiches featured in the display cabinet. Upon ordering my friande, she rightly assumed I’d be in need of a coffee, and I can see why she insisted — it was beautifully strong and smooth. I grabbed a paper, took a seat and within minutes she brought over my order and offered to fetch me a bottle of water. it’s very easy to become lost in time in this place, so I saw a lot of people coming and going, with the service remaining the same for each customer; unwaveringly chirpy. Definitely a top spot to check out.

Larder 2, the little brother café of the much loved Little Larder on Moray Street, opened the doors to its coffee joint this year. It’s attached to the entrance of a bike shop on Commercial Road in Newstead and do a mean cup of coffee! With so many other places to get a caffeine fix in the area, I only got around to Larder 2 a few days ago, and was pleasantly surprised to see that not only do they do great coffee, but also serve breakfast all day. Score! There are also plenty of smoothies and juices on the menu as well, so this little place packs a punch. The atmosphere is a little strange, but I think that is largely because there’s a bike shop directly behind where customers are eating and drinking. If I was a cyclist it would be a dream combination! With the combo of friendly, fast service and the awesome coffee I had, I will definitely be popping back in to Larder 2 soon for a taste of their breakfast menu. I suggest you do the same thing!
