The Old Mount Gambier Gaol is a business like no other! The building was erected in 1866 and designed to be used as an ‘Old English Gaol’. It operated as a prison until 1995. Once the gaol was no longer housing inmates, the historic building was transformed into a sixty five bed accommodation facility, and since 2010 has extended to become a function and event centre.

We now offer affordable accommodation in a very unique environment. We are well reviewed on trip advisor and are quickly building a reputation for our cleanliness, value for money and our friendly and helpful staff.

Our unusual building becomes an amazing venue. We regularly facilitate private functions, music shows, art exhibitions, weddings, workshops and seminars.

History

Established in 2010.

We began with a vision to turn an old debilitated building into a vibrant community asset. With an intention to create an atmosphere that was warm, inviting, community and family focused.

We along with our two young boys own and run our family business.

We love to travel, enjoy new experiences and meet refreshing people; creating this business allows us as parents to raise our sons in a beautiful part of Australia whilst still meeting amazing guests from all over the world. Every day we see new faces, are moved and excited by guest’s travel adventures whilst living in an old English prison!

We are still a young business with many more fun ideas and improvements yet to unveil. We have spent the last three years creating and establishing our business & brand. We are now excited to move onto further promoting who we are and what we have to offer!

Meet the Business Owner

Business Owner

My partner James & I own & operate The Old Mount Gambier Gaol.

James has travelled extensively, 43 countries to date. In his former life James worked as a chef, waiter & somillier and has packaged this hospitality knowledge into our business. James is passionate about tourism and promoting our local Limestone Coast area. Jamie’s past also includes a stint in the corporate world, which enables him to chase what he wants with confidence. He is the guru behind acts such as ‘Bliss n Eso’ and ‘Xavier Rudd’ playing at our venue.

I on the other hand possess skills of organisation, planning and to do lists! I create plans both strategic & financial. I develop our protocols, job descriptions and take care of all administerial requirements. I oversee all marketing &promotion for our brand and look after the needs of all weddings, school camps, tours, workshops, seminars & community events. Between the two of us we are just about the complete package, our super staff help us with the rest.
