I really love the BBQ pork belly they do here. Goes well with the tri-color tea.

So little did I know there was a big Asian café culture that is based on something decidedly different, yet straightforward, than the typical Aussie café. Here, you drink tea. And it’s amazing tea. Not that old british stuff, dribbled with lemon. Malaysian Milk Tea is what they do here. I’m not sure it’s the best around, as I don’t have much to compare it to, but I’d guess by the response from some friends when sharing such insight that this is quite a good spot for it!

I only really discovered Malaysian food when I moved to Melbourne. There are many Malaysians here and many Malaysian restaurants. The Old Town Kopitiam is one of two establishments from the same owners. The other Old Town Kopitiam(Mamak) is located in QV and seems to be a lot more popular because of its location. The Old town Kopitiam in Chinatown is usually quite busy as well. Plus, it’s a refreshing change from all of the Chinese restaurants. I ordered the roti canai($ 4) and it was delicious here. I can’t ever get enough of roti and it’s really cheap. Most places serve roti canai for $ 8. We shared a char kway tweo($ 9.90) and nasi lemak with beef rendang($ 9.90). Everything was delicious and cheap! They also serve teh tarik, which I’m not particularly fond of because it’s too sweet, but my partner loves it. Overall, good service and good food. If you’re looking for something that’s not Chinese, I definitely recommend this place.
