History

Established in 2011.

Mister Close (as in not far) is the dream of two schoolmates who met 28 years ago. We set out to create a space in the middle of the city that is unique for office folk, keen shoppers, uni students and locals who love their food. A sanctuary where you least expect it offering the widest selection of food made daily in our kitchen. Everything you need in a day is here — from healthy (and decadent) breakies, killer lunches and the 3pm munchies (not to mention our Campos specialty roasted coffee, exotic teas and beverages). If that isn’t enough — we also have office catering, yep we know — outrageous!

Mr Close was our Year 8 Geography teacher the year we met. Just like his geography lessons our food will take you all round the world. We aim to serve good, honest food drawing inspiration from right across the globe. Mister Close will excite and challenge all your senses and so will our ever changing menu. Our food, coffee, tea and other good stuff is matched with a calm place to be.

Tall feat to manage to create a bit of a vibe within a Target-​driven shopping complex and opening to the Swanston street foot-​traffic madness, but Mister Close manages to pull it off. Enjoyed the sign that says you wont be served if talking on your phone — take that self-​important business-​folk of Melbourne! Sit and relax a little instead!

Interesting breakfast menu choice, loved what I had — the meat lovers piece of resistance — if it stays on the menu. Campos coffee served here was great, and I loved it was a spacious yet homely dine in area, plenty of room for a solo breaky, with single person armour (aka an iPad) to spread out.
Staff were friendly and service relatively fast. Clean and modern décor.

I stumbled across this by chance as I saw the crazy lines for a certain phone release today…
I love the cosy vibe of this fresh and modern café. A staff member was shooing the birds, ‘a daily struggle’ as said by one of the staff. You shoo them out, they fly to the other side of the café.
The menu is concise and quite varied compared to other breakky/​brunch places. I had delicious beetroot pikelets with salmon and their homemade mayo and leafy greens! Delectable! Worth a visit!

Consistently good coffee and a interior that looks like they were forcing the hipster vibes a little too much. The location is so central and easy to find that you can guarantee the place is always going to be packed full of soccer mums, out of town shoppers and corporate crowds on their lunch breaks. It can feel a little like a canteen sometimes because of this. Having said that the food is nice and usually pre prepared to some extent so quite fast. Coffee is decent. Worth checking out for a on the go lunch

OK — there is an item on the menu here which is a hands-​down in-​its-​class Melbourne winner! By which I mean, there is nothing as good as it in Melbourne.
I am talking of course about the egg and bacon breakfast baguette. I don’t know what they do to it, but it is simply the tastiest egg-​bacon-​some-​kinda-​bread combination I have ever tasted. Maybe they truffle the eggs or something — I don’t know, and I don’t particularly care. All I care is that Mister Close never stops making and serving this fine specimen of breakfast food.
Coffee is good too, and I have always enjoyed my lunches at Mister Close, but for me, from now on, whenever anyone mentions «Mister Close» I will immediately think of the egg and bacon breakfast baguette. It’s my new happy place.

It’s a bit pricey for a flatbread sandwich and a small salad… but the portions were a good amount and I was quite full afterwards. I’ll definitely go once in a great while since the food seems pretty healthy and the ingredients are tasty.
I tried their roast chicken flatbread and sweet potato salad as a takeaway. The flatbread sandwich was very meaty and I was hoping for more arugula to balance all the meat. The salad was decent but I want to try their other selections. They had a mushroom risotto that looked good.
The staff was very attentive and friendly. It helped that I went with someone who was a regular.
If you’re willing to splurge for lunch, I’d say go for it.

For melbourne and especially this part of melbourne, this is a great place. I had a breakfast here, I think it was the egg and bacon role with some ‘gourmet’ condiments. I also got a chai latte (which was legitimate loose leaf tea actual spices) which came with foamy milk in a little teapot. so rich, soo good,
The portions aren’t going to blow you away, but they aren’t skimpy either and besides its so cheap you could buy two breakfasts here. The flavour and texture are top notch.
After my last disappointment grabbing breakfast out in melbourne, this place has redeemed Melbourne. I have faith I can get a decent value and tasty breakfast within it’s CBD.
I’ll be back.

Weird location — Amazing Food!
If i hadn’t been recommended to Mister Close i would never have thought to look for it in Midtown (which is normally filled with weird little shops!) This is definitely the jewel in the crown.
Went for breakfast a few days ago and had the Granola, friends had the porridge and the favo toast. We all oohhh’ed and aahhhh’ed as the breakkie was delivered on wooden paddles and beautiful bowls. The granola was super crunchy and tasty washed with fruit and yogurt while the porridge had a consistency unlike normal porridge — it was creamy, fluffy and full of seeds and nuts — delish! Not being a fan of avo i passed on the favo but both friends made all the right noises!
The coffee was wonderful and strong — just what you need to start the day. My recommendation for any business breakfast where you want to impress or if you are starting a Saturday shopping trip!

I like the fact that I’ve never been here before even though it’s really central. Unfortunately, what I wanted to eat here wasn’t available … twice. I ended up settling for the burrito which unfortunately was more a wrap with generic beans and lacking in any flavour that would normally come associated with the «burrito» labelling. Extra star goes to friendly staff service.

For all the excitement; this place is a little deceptive to find.
Enter off swanston street and it will be much easier, instead of having to traipse
about in some sort of geometric maze, fumbling along until you finally find it.
Nb; this happens when entering from the target centre side. Swanston is much
easier. There’s also a secret entrance off Bourke, just near a fancy looking lift.
I must say, I have been enticed about the premise of this place since first hearing
of it. It is a welcome update to a rather old daggy and shambles of a food court
before it. Hipster waiter who was actually on the money and served well. An awesome breakfast menu, that is playful with it’s words. Toasties included.
Soup, Sandwiches, Main sized warm dishes, which are mostly salad, look
worthy of another visit. All good no less. South African something or other
hot chocolate. Teas, Chais, and beers too. They make a point about the Campo
coffee and work hard at the quality assurance.
Corner of Bourke and Swanston, where the Telstra building is, head through
the little walkway opening, near the money exchange booth. Daily lunch menu
printed. Would be better if i had more money to spend.

Mister Close is a café located just inside the entrance of Midtown Plaza near Bourke Street Mall and is a recent and welcome addition to the weekend brunch scene in the Melbourne CBD.
Opened by two friends in mid 2011, they named the café after their high school geography teacher! As maps are one of my many little geeky passions, I feel right at home here amongst the cartographic features.
The furniture and café design is lovely, the menu is fantastic (and funny! Love the Piece of Resistance pun) and coffee is solid. Service is always excellent and the house made rocky road is divine.
Highly recommended.

I’ve grabbed take away coffees here on a number of occasions. Can’t comment on the food, but it looks good.
Coffee was good and very needed in this part of town — especially considering the options around — the three spazzo coffee amigos of Hairy Hudsons, Craptain Starbucks and Creepy Gloria Jeans.

Mister Close is a great new addition to an area containing mostly average cafes. The food here has never failed to disappoint and the amount of thought put into the menu shows.
It’s a table service café if you’re after a seat and the staff are mostly attentive and helpful. The price goes down by a few dollars for take away but be prepared to wait. The reason being that there seems to be a bit of disorganisation with the take away setup and often people will be trying to settle their table service bills in the same line. The result in my experience has been 10 – 15 minutes waits to grab something, however once you get it the food is excellent.

A new venture opened by the ex owner of Arcadia in Fitzroy, Mister Close is a dazzling jewel in the heart of the Target Centre on the corner of Bourke and Swanston streets.
The service can be at times perfunctory, however the coffee is so good you’ll want another right away. The food is also top notch, all made in house using fresh, high quality ingredients. Be prepared to cue for your coffee in the mornings and to pay a premium for your bits, but you do walk away wit every intention of coming back again.

I went here with a friend, late in the day near to Mister Close (ing) time. Is that a really bad pun… It’s a really bad pun.
But never mind! Mister Close is anything but bad! They’re awesome!
My friend and I wished to order some sandwiches but the ones we wanted were sold out (shed a tear) so we chose other sandwiches (yummy salami for me!) and then because the girl serving us felt bad for not having our original sandwich choices available, she gave us a complimentary plate of rocky road for us to devour! How lovely!
They also actually stock a hangover cure in the form of a Turkish bread, bacon, aoili, lettuce and tomato with red onion relish sandwich.
The passion of the place is clear — two friends created this café and named it in honor of their grade 5 teacher. Darn cute I say!
I like the way its set out and the fact that its in Bourke Stree mall. I used to consider that place a hole till Mister Close showed up.

Before you continue reading, I want you to know that my review may be partially influenced by my unrequited love for this café’s sign — the outline of a man fit out with mustache and tie. If he existed, I would take him home to meet my mum. There’s still a secret hope that somewhere out there he does exist.
Now we can move on. The coffee beans they use are Campos, a very popular roaster in Sydney. I’d say the coffee is pretty decent but I had to wait an inexcusably long time for it.
The food on the other hand was really quick and very pleasing. I had a fresh salmon sandwich comprising a good dollop of cream cheese, a zing of fresh herb mayo, capers, red onion and a surprising yet satisfying crunch of celery. The food is fresh and a really good alternative to other cafes in the area. I do warn though that it’s pricey but you gotta pay up for good ingredients.
I will be revisiting this place in the future, if only to say hi to my man.
