Really cool vibes from this CBD bar. Cosy, homely, with a hip and European feel, there’s only the one beer on tap but a great collection of bottled craft beers. Might become my new post work drinks hang.

This is a good place for a business meeting — during the day the outside seating area is best as it’s not quite so much like a bar. It’s easy to get a coffee or drink and the service is very good — our server seemed to anticipate our needs well, he almost read our minds! There’s not many seating options inside, it’s mostly bar stools. Lunch, drinks and snacks are easy and everything is informal. There’s a good, relaxed atmosphere here.

The burgers are better at… Dikstein’s; the slogan should go. Partner had the beef — best he’s tasted. I had the halloumi and couldn’t fault it. The coffee, despite their use of Vitasoy, was pretty good — their barista must be a magician. Nice, small-producer beers on tap. A warm, welcoming atmosphere. If there was one of these in Adelaide, that’s where I would take my work every day.

This place was convenient more than anything for us, being right next door to our hotel. I was the only person eating so I ordered the avocado and feta smash, as I had done a few places during my stay in Melbourne. The coffee was good, and the smash would of been great had it not been for an ingredient stuff up. Where it said it had mint in it, it actually had parsley which threw the flavours off for me! Nonetheless, staff were friendly and prices were ok.

Cute place with limited menu, but we were ecstatic to learn that they can do any of their pizzas on a gluten free crust. Definitely a welcome surprise that they’re not advertising. I had the chicken burger myself, huge, messy and tasty. Had the Semillon/sauv blanc for $ 6.50 a glass, the price was right and it was also good. Only wish is that they had some chips /wedges /other fried potatoes to go with my sandwich.

Cheap very nice pizzas, but they’re also quite small. Need one and a half or two to fill me up. But great flavours and choice of toppings.

Above the bar facing Little Collins is a sign advising, in capital letters, that«Jack is a wanker». Glad my name’s not Jack. Because in a city straining under the weight of many cool and unusual bars, Dikstein’s Corner Bar is one of the rare breed that is just easy. Don’t know what I mean? It’s a quality some places have that makes them the no-brainer option when you want a post-work beer, or a good spot to have a quick lunch and a glass of wine. They’re the ones with the wine list that’s small but packed with goodies; they have the tasty, inexpensive food that fills a hole and flies out of the kitchen; and there’s the indoor-outdoor seating that encourages you to linger as if you’re in your back yard or a friend’s lounge. Downstairs, Dikstein’s patrons in their 20s and 30s clip-clop over the bare wooden floorboards in the darkened, cramped space between the bar and running board on the wall opposite. Upstairs, old tables stand on threadbare rugs while a bench seat topped by flat cushions runs along two walls. The service is haphazard(generally good, but with the odd mishap) yet unobtrusive, which lends itself to the private atmosphere and sense of having found a hideaway from the bustling CBD outside. I won’t go on about the excellent $ 5.90 gourmet pizzas, or the simple range of mid-priced beers(the wine list needs some serious work) — others have done that better than I — but for a cosy, relaxed bolt-hole in the city, Dikstein’s is my first port of call. And if your name is Jack, keep it to yourself.
