I stumbled upon this place while visiting Federation Square, and it ended up being the best meal I’ve had since visiting Melbourne from the States! I ended up getting the Mongolian Beef Steak with jasmine rice and oolong tea. It was by far the best Mongolian beef I have ever had– cooked to perfection. The views were nice and I enjoyed the service of the kind waitress. Coming here again before I leave!

I sat down here with a group for a birthday dinner and was treated to course after course of beautiful Chinese food. Three dishes stood out: 1. The calamari, a beautifully thin and crispy batter on the outside with perfectly cooked calamari inside(I just wish there was more to go around). 2. The giant prawns: deep fried in a deliciously thin crispy spicy textured layer, so good and so tasty I was happy to eat the prawn inside its shell for the extra flavour and texture(something I’ve never entertained ever before, it felt like what the original prawn cracker must have been like). 3. The thinly sliced steak: I’ve no idea what is was called but it was perfectly cooked and so tender(a little raw in the middle — if you’re from the well-done brigade — just close your eyes and enjoy the ride, it’s worth it.) There is nothing grungy or try-hard hipster about the décor or the menu, it’s just smooth and a little understated. Works for me. Before I went I read some pretty harsh reviews about the place, but while the night wasn’t cheap by any means at 60/head, I have to say I was happy with the food, the service and the atmosphere. Would I go here again? It’s a YES from me.

We ordered delivery through Menulog which arrived quite quickly, although delivery instructions were ignored. The cream of chicken and corn soup tasted like a mouthful of butter. The soft shell crab and the hot pepper chicken had wayyyy too much batter. I couldn’t even taste or see the soft shell crab! We had to chuck out most of the batter from the pepper chicken and to be honest what’s left of it was quite tender and the Szechuan peppercorn sauce was quite nice. The scallops was probably the best dish out of all of the dish ordered but that was just passable. There seemed to be quite a lot of salt and MSG added as I felt thirsty alllll night. Overall, Bokchoy Tang was sadly disappointing. It might suit a Western palate 20 years ago, but honestly, people’s tastes are more refined now, Bokchoy Tang would need to up its game if it wants to survive.

My wife and I had the two person summer banquet, basically Chinese degustation. All the dishes(Mongolian beef, lobster, duck pancakes, scallops) were excellent, and the service was very attentive. Flaming ice cream dessert was cool! Best dish was the pumpkin and spinach, quite tasty. My wife really liked the duck, very good and not greasy like duck sometimes is. And the lobster was amazingly buttery! The Mongolian Beef was extremely tender. It brought back memories of Argentina where they cut the beef with a spoon! Very tender and flavourful

Living in Melbourne you encounter great places to eat that don’t break the bank. Bokchoy Tang unfortunately does not fall into that category. Located upstairs on the top floor of the cross-bar in Fed Square, The restaurant is dimly lit and provides a intimate setting. My mate and I came here to celebrate his newly acquired(dream) car. We were met by a lovely waitress who seated us and take our orders for drinks, cocktails were selected and we ordered appetisers also. The cocktails came out in a few minutes and appetisers followed not too long after. Mains were ordered and we went on drinking and chatting. The mains took a little bit longer than i expected but no less came out and we dug right in. My main was a little bit lack-luster however my friend said his wasn’t too bad. The duration of our meal was spent with a piano player singing along whilst playing the piano. Really wasn’t my cup of tea, sounded extremely repetitive. All-in-all, a good setting for an intimate conversation, cocktails are great and food is half decent but getting smacked with over $ 120 for two people(As the two star rating says) Meh, I’ve experienced better.
