I adore Anton’s– not only do they have incredibly beautiful items, but they are often designed and made in Melbourne, so it’s nice to confidently buy ethically made clothing. I always feel fabulous in my Anton’s gear, and I like knowing it will never go out of style. :)

I think Anton’s has moved around a bit the last few years. I seem to recall it once being on the third level of Melbourne Central, and then out on Little Latrobe I think, and now it’s on the ground floor of Melbourne Central, right near the cupcakes shop and the lolly shop in the laneway heading towards Elizabeth St. And it’s bigger than it was before, with a large quantity and range of stock. In the window you’ll see the 1940s-style suites, but inside there’s a mix of excellent clothing and accessories from the best of the past, from the 40s to the 80s, from suits to street wear and toys and games and shoes and watches. Yes, this is more than a store for people wanting to play 1940s dress-ups.

Antons sells the most beautiful 1940s inspired suits and clothes for men and women. Opulent doesn’t even begin to describe what you’ll find once you step inside. Entering this shop is not for the faint of heart, though, for those price tags might make your heart skip a few beats(reasonable for what you’re buying, but can be a month’s rent for the average student). Impeccably cut and stitched, from unique and luxurious fabrics, these clothes will, no doubt about it, make you feel a million dollars. One thing I wish the store would work on, however, is the window display. Walking past the storefront, you would not think it were anything other than a high-end costume shop. The display, frankly, is a little tacky, so don’t go judging this book by its cover.
