Newcastle born & bred boyfriend, as we drive to Mayfield for coffee: «You’re taking me where for coffee? No really, no one goes to Mayfield. I’m locking the doors.» You see, I’ve learnt in the years we’ve been together and visited Newcastle that poor ol’ Mayfield has a less than favourable reputation among locals. I’m telling you that in the next 5 – 10 years that’s going to change and cafes like The Locomotive are leading the way on that change. I can’t remember how I came across this café but once I did I had bookmarked it for an immediate visit upon arriving in Newcastle. We arrive and find this new café in a store front that has been many things in it’s 100 year history, including a butcher. The café owners have taken the space and kept it fairly minimal. There’s a few seats and a table that’s at perfect standing height but it’s really more of a take-away vibe. They’re pouring Small Batch roasted beans on filter and espresso and these are nicely paired with freshly baked cookies and cake from local baker, Hello Naomi. I was lucky enough to try both filter and espresso and both work a treat. The conversation with an equally passionate barista makes the experience at Locomotive all the more endearing. After our first visit my darling boyfriend took back his words and said he should trust me when it comes to hunting out cafes in new cities. Don’t believe the naysayers and take a chance the next time you’re looking for an outstanding cup of coffee in Newcastle. The Locomotive is a diamond in the rough!
