St Ann’s Chapel

OK so I like a nice church … and I’ve just found another one. This one is a tiny one though and is very cute!
St Ann’s Chapel is located at 17 Finniss Street, Marion and is a part of the Marion Historic Village. I like the fact the Marion Council and a group of interested residents have worked together to map out points of historical significance in their community and St Ann’s is one of the more delightful landmarks in the village.
The Chapel, originally built in 1859 was renovated and restored to its current state in the early 1970’s including the addition of six leadlight windows by Cedar Prest.
At the back of the church sits the church’s bell — in a gum tree. The story goes that the church ordered two bells, one for St Ann’s and one for another, larger, church but the two got mixed up and St Ann’s scored the larger of the two when they weren’t supposed to. Neverthelss, the larger bell was blessed and hung in a gum tree out back where it still sits today. Also out back is a small cottage named after its last occupant Annie Doolan but it originally it was used as a convent for the Sisters of St Joseph.
