While wandering down Glenferrie Road, I came across a fantastic little second hand bookstore, aptly named, Second Edition. This is the first of Brotherhood of St Laurence’s book specialty stores. While some second hand stores can be overly stocked, making it difficult to browse for reading matter, Second Edition counters this with its own unique solution. In fact, Second edition keeps itself neat and tidy, almost chic with a large tree shaped book shelf that sits in the middle of the store. Comfy, vintage style armchairs provide a loungy atmosphere to chill in while a café serving up hot cuppas makes for a very different experience to conventional second hand stores. The atmosphere is great and the well organised books makes browsing through the various hard covers and paper backs so much easier and less stressful. Find high quality recycled books sourced from generous public donations including all genres you would find at a regular bookshop, plus a treasure trove of vintage records and magazines.

Doesn’t it feel good to do something nice? Not really, unless I get something in return. Admit it, that’s how 99% of you think. And I’m not judging, I think deep down that’s what motivates most of my actions. I guess that’s why I’m giving the Second Edition café 4 stars, cause I get to do something good and be rewarded for it. Everybody wins. For those of you who don’t know, Second Edition is the shop set up by the Brotherhood charity. It’s kind of tucked away on Glenferrie road, near Grill’d. I’ve only been in for a coffee and it’s quite decent, especially considering all profits go back to the Brotherhood. The books are great too. Considering the shrinking population of bookstores, it’s great to have a second hander in the neighbourhood. So do something good for your community… and of course yourself
