History

Established in 2004.

The idea of Honeybee Toys began when my daughter’s were born. It became increasingly frustrating to find beautiful toys for them that were non-​toxic, well made and would promote imaginative play. I found myself surrounded by a sea of battery operated toys with strange accents, flashing lights and strong plastic smells. I couldn’t imagine giving such toys to my newborns. I wanted their childhood to have a sense of wonder for the world around them, to discover their developing senses, creativity, thinking and growing bodies in a healthy and open-​ended way.

I searched, first locally, and then further afield for good toys and found wonderful craftspeople and educators in Europe were still making traditional and well thought out toys made from eco timbers and natural materials. Thus the idea of having a European style toystore in Australia was born, and Honeybee became a reality… our toys were so well loved they are now used by kindergartens and families around Australia.

Business Owner

Melissa worked in children’s educational publishing before starting her family and is the author of «Growing into Gardening with your Children». She lives in Melbourne’s leafy outer suburbs. She finds inspiration for Honeybee Toys through watching the journey of her own children and in the philosophy of Rudolf Steiner.
