Best steaks in Mackay. Had the rib eye/​rib fillet with mushroom sauce. Sensational. The dining room was full and decided to eat in the public bar. Bar staff were friendly and even with a busy bar still checked on us regularly.

The Austral houses Mackay’s best steaks in town. There’s no doubt about it.
Although I don’t get to come here as often as I’d like to when I’m back home these days, I always recommend the tourists come here for a meal. The service is quick and the portions are very generous. I wouldn’t call it a proper restaurant as it definitely has more of a relaxed feel — one that reflects the good ol’ Mackay atmosphere in fact. Some may liken it more to a Bistro environment.
Beware! Once you get locked into trying one of the juicy, delicious steaks here you will become a repeat offender like many locals. Take my sister for instance. She’s here at least once a fortnight, if not more. That being said, I can’t say the extra protein from those steaks she’s been having are going away any time soon without some rigorous exercise but as she said «the gain is worth the taste» — she’ll kill me for repeating that one…
