This is one of those pubs that you can quite easily miss if you don’t know where it is because it is set back from the road surrounded by natural bushland. I’ve been wanting to come here ever since I went past it years ago to seem them redeveloping it, and while it was quite hike to get to(especially if you don’t have a car) I was really glad that I did. The bush setting certainly gives it a lot of character, and the beer garden, which looks out over the creek, is a great place to spend your time. It appears that it turns into a night spot after 7:00 pm because they bring out the ID checker and station a bouncer at the entrance. This is certainly a place I would like to return to some time.

The Lower Plenty pub has been around for years. I remember in my younger days when I lived in this area it was the place to go. My girlfriend and I visited on a sunny Sunday afternoon for a few beers and a catch up. It was a good atmosphere sitting outside with great scenery. We shared some Calimari and I found it to be just what I needed. Its no inner city bar but its not the typical suburban pub either. I advise the older generation to steer clear on a Friday night unless your up for the younger generation with their orange spray tans and the macho boys flaunting their stuff! I had a nice experience there and the staff were attentive to our needs.

When I moved into Lower Plenty I thought I’d be eating and drinking at the Lower every other week if not more(I live a very short walk from there). But after a number of really bad meals I don’t go there at all except when forced to by for family gatherings(and now when I go I eat before hand and just have one drink). It isn’t cheap which doesn’t bother me if the food is good and of a decent size, it isn’t. When I can cook food better at home for ¼ of the price then don’t expect me to go there. I had a Caesar Salad where they boiled the chicken and the egg(hard), the bacon was microwaved, the croutons were rock hard. Worst Caesar ever and when I told the waiter they said sorry and walked off. I’ve also had about 3 other bad food experiences there, while they were quite awhile ago I refuse to go back as I don’t want to waste any more money there. A Pub that serves food that cannot get a single guy who lives a short walk away to go… It makes me scratch my head, when I want to Pub meal I go to Greensborough or closer to the city or cook it myself.

«The Lower» has a leafy outside terrace which is a relaxing place to enjoy a beverage. or three on a sunny day. This part of the hotel is also home to a large bar and TAB, but you can order food from the bistro to enjoy in the more casual setting. Fridays here go from relaxed to party HQ as the DJ livens things up as young and old head past security into the hot spot Terrace Bar. Saturday night is 80’s music night so head here to get your retro dance moves out! To enjoy the bistro on weekends or in groups it is best to book as it gets busy. It is worth the prep time though as the food is good pub grub. The large dining room is loud and casual and you will have to head up to the counter to order your meal and the bar to grab a drink. If your toting kids then the games area at the back of the bistro should distract them while you linger over coffee or desert. The LP Hotel has a gaming area which is filled with pokies if your into that type of thing(I’m not) which also has a separate bar. My tip? Drop by the bistro on a Wednesday night for $ 12 Parma and Pot! If your taking your party on the road then the LP Hotel Bottle shop is located 200 metres down the road, to the right as you exit the upper car park.
