I love Ensemble Theater. I watched Richard III and it was brilliant! This was my third show here and each one was great. This is a small theater and production company on the water. There is a bar in the foyer were you can get wine, craft beer, coffee & tea. They have some snacks but no real food. The biggest problem with this theater is parking. Parking is nearly impossible, especially if you are watching a matinée show.

I was in a production of Richard III last night. Well not IN in, but I was so close to the action I was kind of a part of the cast, almost joined them for a bow at the end. And that’s the beauty of this darling of a suburban theatre, located on a tranquil bay down in the dark depths of Kirribilli. Its super small, super intimate, with U-shaped banks of seating that encircle(ensorcel?) the stage so there is quite literally no bad seat in the house, they’re all brilliant and you can see very wink, nod, and arched eyebrow from the players. The best part about Richard III(apart from the astonishing cast performances)? The old duck asleep in the front row, snoring lightly. Fair play, she was about a hundred and ten, but she just looked so peaceful. To sleep, perchance to dream!

The Ensemble is pretty much the only theatre on the North Shore that puts on plays featuring Sydney thespians and that is reviewed by mainstream performing arts media. Housed in a former boatshed on the harbour at Careening Cove, the charming building still boasts a corregated iron shell that sits well amongst its back street, neighbourhood surrounds. The last time I went was to see the opening night of Rain Man with local television star Alex Dimitriades in the lead role. As expected, the crowd here tends to be a little older, so my fellow less-than-retirement-age performance enthusiast and I felt a little out of place. The bar isn’t much to get excited about during intermission, and it’s definitely not a scene-y kind of place; what you come here for is the opportunity to see well-known actors in the flesh in an intimate setting, performing with one of our oldest stage companies.
