History

Established in 1974.

The BJC is one of the few jazz venues which boasts its own building and its own band; the 19-​piece Brisbane Big Band, while independently run, has been the Club’s resident band since 1974.

The club plays an important role in fostering the appreciation of jazz across all ages and nationalities and regularly hosts school and college bands in support of our Youth in Jazz activities. The Club books a wide variety of both established and emerging, local and International jazz entertainers to appear at the Club every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday plus regular monthly events.

Manager

Tony Freedland — President

Tony has been a member of the Brisbane Jazz Club for many years and was co-​opted onto the Committee in 2006. Tony played an important role overseeing much of the building renovation and electrical work carried out at the Club during 2012. He now directs the maintenance of the building ensuring the many ‘odd jobs’ required are attended to and oversees the operation of merchandise sales. Tony took on the role of Treasurer in 2007, and has continued in that role until 2014, when he was elected as President. His contributions to the progress and improvement of the club have been highly valued.

It doesn’t look like much of a club from the outside, more like an old Beach House… but on the inside, it is a classy little Jazzy dive.
I went here for the Ozmanouche Festival Final night, it was amazing. The sheer talent from all over Australia which comes here during this Festival to play is amazing. If you are a jazz lover like I am, you should definetely check this place out. It is the Brisbane hub of all things Jazz, events through the year, you can go as a member/​non-​member, usually there is some sort of fee to go to an event, but it’s a reasonable price.
You can even volunteer if you have free time to give. The prices may be a little up there for the food and drink with a lemon lime and bitters going to $ 4. But for the ambience, music, talent and experience, it’s worth it.

The Brisbane Jazz Club is a not-​for-​profit that has a house band, it’s own building (a former boat shed) that survived floods of 1974 and 2011, and which books national and international acts. The place is attractive for its location, as an alternative night out, for the good drinks, but first of all of course as a live Jazz venue.
The setting feels like a real venue of old with a series of tables placed on a sloping surface toward the stage. With a glass half-​empty outlook one could say that it feels a bit cramped; I’d prefer the glass half-​full approach where it is clearly nice that some extra space between rows of chairs allows for dinner and a more total experience.
That dinner was not the highlight in our case (with über-​mild green curry — but very nice pork fillet with sweet potato) but the bar was excellent. Add to that the unique riverside location with great views of the city skyline (and the CityCat serenely gliding by at regular intervals) from the deck but also from inside the club during the performances, and you’re bound to have a great night out.

The last time I visited the Brisbane Jazz Club was pre-​floods, and I’m yet to see what the club now looks like after its refurb.
The first time I visited the Jazz Club was also the first time I’d heard of this former boat shed’s existence. And perched upon a great vantage point for the river and the rest of the CBD it isn’t such a bad place to enjoy a (cheap) and cheerful evening — especially if you or friends are into Jazz.
We arrived one evening to enjoy a set by the Nat Bartsch Trio and for $ 20 each it was a steal especially given the views of the expansive views of the river. I’ll admit, at the, time the interior was a little daggy and for mid-​20s it may not be the ultimate night-​out destination. The performance on the night will make or break your experience. If its good, your more likely to forgive the daggy surroundings. But that said, it’d be a great spot to bring your parents.

The Brisbane Jazz Club has been around for years and is still situated in the same old boat shed where it was established in 1972. Playing quality live jazz most weekend evenings (usually Thursday to Sunday) this place has an old-​world, understated charm to it. The building and interior are really nothing special – it’s pretty old and shabby – but you’re always guaranteed a great night with good quality music.
It’s a little bit pricey with tickets costing from $ 15 to $ 25 depending on the act and they advise you to book online, rather than rocking up and risking there being no tickets left. Also, get there early to get your seat as once people are settled, they don’t like moving around (tends to be an older crowd). There’s both indoor and outdoor seating, with spectacular views of the city. A night at the Jazz Club is a lovely, slightly old-​school way to spend a Saturday night in Brisbane. Also a good venue for events.
