The Arena is so many things in the one location. It has a huge pool area, a gym, courts for different sports, a crèche, café and hockey fields. I come to the Arena for the pools. There are two main pools, the freestyle pool for the kids, which has a slide(but only open on wekeends & holidays) and a whirlpoool. It also has a full size competition 50m pool with 10 lanes for swimming laps. My only issue is swimming lessons are here all day at times, with school groups during the day and swimming clubs in the afternoons and weekends. If you are like me and like to do laps, do yourself a favour and make a quick call before you go to make sure that the lanes are free and not taken over by kids.

One of the great things about this gym is the level and range of facilities available at the one venue. It has a gym with all the normal cardio and weights equipment, lots of group class rooms, including a dedicated spin, and circuit room and of course the swimming pool with plenty of lap lanes. Memberships can be for a combination of the gym, classes and pool access. Membership for all three sets you back around $ 18 per week. There is no set contract or joining fee which means that you can leave anytime. The staff are friendly. They will happily show you how to use the equipment if you are new or can arrange some PT sessions for you. The one thing that lets this gym down is that during peak times morning and night is that it is too busy, which means a long wait for the cardio equipment and popular weights machines. If you are a student or have flexible working hours get a non peak membership and come during the day. If you work 9 to 5 try to avoid the place between 5 and 6.30 at night or 6 til 7.30 in the mornings. I am not into the group classes myself, but they do have a good variety at different times during the day and they always seem full. I can highly recommend the Circuit class for those who want to push themselves or change up their routine. The combination of weights circuit and different cardio exercises keep your heart rate up.

Arena Joondalup covers quite a range of different things. I could write about each different thing, well some of the ones I have used or heard about. Like Jets, a acting and singing group that holds classes there every week or the childcare and after school care centre down stairs. Or even the gym and gym classes that take place everyday. But instead I am going to focus on what I think it is most recognised for, the pool. I have been going to the pool ever since I was really young. We did swimming lessons there when I was at school, I started in the small pool and by the end was dominating in the big pool! Its where I learnt to swim and I think that is why I have an emotional attachment to it. If I am going swimming it will always be here. I used to go to ‘hang’ with my friends when I was in high school, it is cheap to get in and the ‘kiddy’ pool has so many cool features my two favourites being the whirlpool, a big circle that had jets pushing through it so it moves really fast and feels like rapids. The amount of memories I have in that pool. The water slide is another favourite, it isn’t massive but as a 12year old it is the coolest thing ever! Writing about it now is making me want to go, I wonder if it will be as fun 8 years on?

The Arena at Joondalup is a gym and rec centre that really does have a little something for everybody. It’s best known to the people of the Northern suburbs for its swimming pool, as their school probably did swimming lessons there. There are a couple of swimming pools available for different reasons, there is a public pool with ten lanes so you can exercise doing your laps, a training pool, times for water aerobics and various other water events occur at the Arena. There is a top quality gym, that offers membership, fitness classes, and personal training. The Arena has a good reputation for basketball, especially as the Perth Wildcats play their season here. And also there are large tennis courts available for casual hire. The Arena is also a popular venue for hosting music concerts, it has had a star studded array of musician play here before, and annually hosts Future Music Festival(which is amazing for people living in the northern suburbs to finally not have to travel over an hour for a festival). The Arena is available to hire for any kind of function you need from a corporate one to a school one, using any of their facilities. It is a top quality swimming pool, gym and sports centre, always clean and tidy and the service is always friendly.

Arena Joondalup is part events venue and part fitness facility, located just south of the main Joondalup precinct. As an events venue, Arena Joondalup is suitable for both private functions and large music events — in the past, it has held music festivals. As a private function venue, it works well if you are anticipating a large group of people. There is a bar, as well as tables, ample seating and a balcony with a view out over Joondalup. There is also a swimming pool available, where people can have a casual swim or can sign up for various aquatic exercise classes. Arena Joondalup is a good venue for private and public events, as well as providing those living in the northern reaches of Perth an accessible fitness facility.
