I absolutely love parks that cater to the picnic minded individual. Mabel is one such park, offering covered picnic tables perfect for a family lunch out in a shady, peaceful part of the world. Where Mabel falls down however is in its lack of shading for play equipment. The equipment itself is your stock-standard playground fare, but with no shade clothes that plastic and metal wonderland is going to be scorching to the touch in summer. Apart from that though, Mabel has all you could ask for in a park. Lots of green grass, trees, places to sit — a great little getaway for anyone after a quiet afternoon.

This is a quaint park retreat close to the business district of Jollimont. Initially a swamp land that was redeveloped by the tree association and the local community to form the reserve it is today, Mabel Talbot is a gorgeous space, with the three tiered playground(with swings, spring based seesaw and slide set) only a small part of the treasures it offers. With shady picnic tables(wooden tops which are rain retardant to a certain extent) and BBQs. I recently learned that the council has also put up some signage along the wooden deck, which pays tribute to the native plants, animals and the history of the area– featuring the long neck turtles– which I have a huge soft spot for. I am yet to spot one«in the wild»(here) but at least I can visit in hope, ever the eternal optimist! It is a beautiful relaxing space, with trees older than time and a rich history to draw on. So for some educational fun check out mabel when you can.

I live just around the corner from Mabel Talbot Park, a park slightly hidden from the street viewers your best access is either going down to the end of Peel, Roseberry or Landsdowne Street or parking along Jersey Street and walking across to the park. It’s quite a small park but is the ideal location to go for a short walk after work or do a work out session with friends(you will see a few training groups here). If you’re more the mellow type there are also benches you can laze around on and relax and appreciate some fresh air, viewing decks to observe some of the wildlife, picnic tables, BBQ for gatherings and most important for parents with children there is a playground and swings!
