Lets keep this simple. This is a good place to begin or develop your rock climbing-ness. It is approachable, comfortable and challenging. Fun too. Lets use some puns: New climbers are shown the ropes by some very friendly and enthusiastic folk. Scaleable difficulties are clearly displayed any you can challange yourself to whatever level your’e comfortable. Two thumbs up.

Rock Climbing. Psh. Who would ever want to do that? That was my reaction to Rock Climbing before a friend dragged me to VRC and I did my first climb. Oh hey, look who’s eating their words now? VRC is not a big gym. Or so I thought when I first stepped into the gym. But 4 months later and I’m still not done with the walls there. Rock climbing is a lot harder than it seems! But oh-so-fun! The sense of achievement is amazing and the high you feel after you finally conquered that @#(*&(#*&% wall will keep you buzzing for a fair few days. So do yourself a favour, book yourself in for their induction session, learn the ropes(literally), hire a harness and get going. Best to bring a friend so you can buddy it up. Busy times are 7pm onwards, so if you want to have more freedom at wall choosing, then go earlier!

Don’t let size deceive you because when you are scaling and then at the top of one those walls inside Vertical Reality you will still hesitate letting go of the wall to abseil down again! Newbs start with a very brief training lesson to «learn the ropes» and then you are set free to begin your climb! A couple of things to note: — wear appropriate gear(minus the short training shorts and skimpy tank tops) — do not bring too many valuables in with you, they basically get you to store everything on communal tables in the climbing area — ask questions when you start out of the guides, they are so friendly and encouraging and will make you feel safe Then cue the Mission Impossible music and begin your accent to the top of the indoor mount with 8 or so other sweating, heaving bodies around you. But never fear, those(probably more pro than you) mountain scalers around you are always the to lend advice as well as give you some aspiration to step up to a more challenging climb!

The only rock climbing place I know about in Adelaide. You hire shoes in a harness, are shown a wall, and are allowed to have at it. More or less. Well, not exactly. You have to have a tutorial session. It’s not as boring as it sounds. When you’re near the top of an especially tall wall, you’ll be thankful for the things they teach you in the tutorial sessions. The place isn’t too expensive. It’s essentially the price of a movie, but — think about it — you get to be a PART of the movie. Your OWN movie. About rock-climbing. Does that sound awesome to you? Oh, I bet it does. Jokes aside, though, the staff are nice and helpful and there are plenty of walls to climb. They take longer to master than you’d think. The place lost favour with me(a creature notorious for his changeability) long before I’d gotten to know every wall. Okay, and NOW, back to joking. So, there was this chicken, see, and there was this road, and…

Vertical Reality Climbing as far as I know is the only place in Adelaide where you can get in a round of indoor climbing. Now there is a place down near the Adelaide Entertainment Center, however I’m told that they only do bouldering, which doesn’t require a harness and a person to belay you. I started going here about 2 to 3 years ago and for a time I was there every week with a friend of mine. We liked the sport so much that we both eventually got our own harnesses and shoes which is a must for serious climbers(ok, we did it mainly because we wanted to save money on harness and shoe rental, but we were pretty serious!) Catering to people of all levels, I’ve seen school groups come in on a regular basis to have a go and even seen an older more seasoned climbers who climb circles around me on the wall. I enjoy it and every wall presents a new challenge. The great thing is that every week if you do it regularly you can feel yourself improving and with each wall you conquer the more you are motivated to return. Walking into the gym, the area is divided into two main areas, with lead climbing being done on the left and bouldering being done on the right area of the gym. Normally Pat is at the front desk and for people who have never climbed before, you would need to call before hand and book in a safety and training induction to learn how to tie your knots and belay the person you are climbing with. This doesn’t take very long and is easier than it sounds. A great place in Adelaide to try out a unique sport, you’re looking to spend $ 15 or more for day entry into the gym depending on if you’re hiring shoes and other extras but they also have memberships whereby you can pay monthly for any time entry for a certain period of time or you can pay for a certain number of entries up front at a discounted price. I highly recommend it to anyone and definitely something challenging for people to try at least once.
