The Brittish lolly shop is not my favourite lolly shop at Hillarys’ it looks sterile and posy and old. Yes it’s in a more popular section than«sweethearts» but it is smaller(with slightly higher stacked shelves) and it’s great that they can use the jars of sweets to decorate the walls but I find the whole thing suffocating and the stress associated with swooping in for a redskin isn’t worth the drama. I’m voting a lolly republic on this one.

There’s something magical about English lolly shops. A sense of nostalgia perhaps, or simply sheer elation at the prospect of so many sweets in one store. It’s charming and old-worldly. The British Lolly Shop on Hillary’s Board Harbour is true to form. The space is compact, but there’s a transportive element as soon as you see the sweets beautifully stacked on the old timber furnishings. Liquorice, humbugs, musks, jubes, sour candies, toffees, liquorice all-sorts, gumballs; so many colours, so many reasons to smile. The chocolate and fudge selection here is great too — quite a noticeable difference from the Aussie sweets we’re used to. In a good way.

A very addictive shop. A blessing on my part is that I am usually in Hillary’s at 9am and it isn’t open, it saves my wallet and my belly. My best piece of adivce, stay well away from the extremely sour lemons, they are impossible to eat and will give you ulcers(but then again if you like that sort of thing). There is a big selection of hard sweets, soft sweets and chocolates. They have my favourite mint humbugs. One of my favourite things here is the reasonable prices compared to some other UK lolly shops in Perth. Indulge.

After migrating to Perth from the Uk, I realised just how much better English sweets are. Now I know many will disagree but well this is my review :) Aussie chocolate isn’t the same, and even after 10years of eating it, I cant seem to enjoy it any where near as much as british chocolate. Now before you say ‘you cant even tell the difference’ Try a piece of Aussie chocolate and then try and piece of british chocolate and try and tell me it doesn’t taste different. Even if you don’t like the english one, there is an obvious difference. This is because of a chemical they put in Aussie chocolate to stop it melting. Anyway less of that. This British sweet shop is great, it is only small, but the prices are reasonable and they have a really wide range of sweets and chocolate, even british crisps(chips). In a perfect tourist location, its not wonder it is busy!

The British Lolly shop is the epitome of a kid in a candy store. They sell a variety of delicious confectionary and gourmet products from the UK: chocolate bars, boiled lollies, liquorice, chips, toffee and nougat. On sunday’s sugar fest I gorged on hazelnut toffee and 10 liquorice chew for $ 1. Win! The British Lolly Shop bring offers the sweet simplicities that truly make you feel like a little kid again.
