This place does the best croissants in Perth and they use actual French butter, not the vegetable shortening crap that so many bakeries use. We had a wide selection of pastries including plain croissant, almond croissant, almond and raspberry croissant, lemon tart and a strawberry and cream tart(no they weren’t all for me: P). I am hard pressed to pick a favourite but I think it might be the almond croissant. Flaky, buttery goodness! Do yourself a favour and go. A word of warning, it can get quite busy so remember that patience is a virtue or better yet, get there when they open(7am) and beat the masses.

Chu Bakery is an ugly building filled with beautiful pastries. It sits opposite the green grass and shady trees of Hyde Park, so you can grab a treat to enjoy outdoors(so long as it’s not raining). This popular bakery often sells out, so go early for all the best choices! My heart skipped a beat — raspberry, lychee, and choux pastry(or pâte à choux in French). The raspberry lychee chu puff($ 5.50) is a cute little thing, but a bit expensive for the size. The pink creamy filling was sweet and tangy, while the pastry was buttery and moist(heh). The chocolate éclair($ 5.50) is pure indulgence. Rich dark choc on top and bursting at the seams with chocolate cream. This was perfect with my friend’s coffee — he enjoyed the house-made cold brew. Next time, I want to try the unusual soft serve ice cream flavours(available on weekends). Chu Bakery is a great place to treat yo’self or to grab a box of delicate hand-made desserts to impress your friends or family. Go ahead and try it for yourself!

Always love dropping into Chu Bakery to grab one of their toast options or the matcha and yuzu puffs. Incredibly busy on a friday morning. Lots of people waiting for their coffee and toasts plus a line to get their goodies. Unfortunately the puffs weren’t ready til after 9. So i ended up going back to get one due to my desperation haha! They had the raspberry lychee puffs available as well. Still have to say the matcha ones are my favourite. Just bear in mind, these baked goodies are pricey, but if you value fresh baked pastries, they are definitely worth it!

Chu bakery has reached considerable Insta-fame since it arrived on the Perth bakery scene a few months ago. Known for its pretty matcha goods, things on toast, stylish décor, croissants and Passionfruit chilli donuts, it’s been on my radar for a while. So, over the weekend, my partner and I decided to take the dog to Hyde park for a walk. It seemed opportunistic to visit Chu bakery in the same outing due to its close proximity on William street. Our visit was nearing 3:30pm(Chu closes at 4) so understandably, the venue was quiet. The slim outside benches were available for the picking and the staff were quietly stacking coffee cups. We ordered one jam donut(the boy wasn’t brave enough for chilli), one latte and a mocha(due to their advertised Valrhona buttons. Yup). Service was quick and the coffees were hot. We took our bounty under a Hyde park tree to sit on the grass. Now, as far as coffee goes, Chu was average to above average. It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t amazing. I like a little bitterness to my coffee, so for me the mocha was rather sweet(but for others that could be perfect). You could taste that the chocolate was melted coverture, not from powdered cocoa. Definite win. Where Chu wins extra points is with its baked goods. That donut? Oh lordy. Fluffy, softly dusted in powdered sugar, good jam to dough ratio, as soft as a bakery donut(eg one that’s not fried to order) can be. My husband called it ‘proper good’ which is rather unusual for him(his top ranked donut is from Bread Ahead, at the Borough Market in London. In terms of dough itself, Chu definitely makes the best quality donut that we’ve had in Perth since returning 2 years ago). I’d definitely go back, both as an easy coffee option for walks in the park and also to try their incredible toast options that I’ve seen all over Instagram. Watch this space…

Because of its handy location opposite Hyde Park, Chu Bakery usually has a slew of hungry lunchers squeezed inside its tiny shop front, picking up a few treats to picnic with. There is no space to eat in, but why would you want to anyway with lovely parkland across the road? It took me a long time to visit Chu but when I did, it opened the flood gates. Needless to say, I’ve been back several times to try different goodies, and this post is an accumulation of those. You don’t think I ate all of these at one time do you? Naturally my son Alex has also aided and abetted me in my quest to sample as many of Chu’s products as possible. The choux puffs are delectable. The fillings are creamy and the puffs are more substantial than the usual pedestrian choux puffs. Meaning they have more taste and texture. We’ve tried the peanut butter and jelly version, but the sweet and fragrant lychee and raspberry puff was the standout. The eclairs at Chu are on a different level to most others I’ve tried(with only bites by D being comparable). Whilst the chocolate filling was scrumptious, the hazelnut filling was sublime. The vanilla cream doughnut was a winner in Alex’s eyes, though I thought the actual doughnut could have been sweeter. Kudos to Chu for using real vanilla beans in the patisserie filling. My favourite though, was the almond croissant. Now I am a devoted seeker-outer of almond croissants and have not found one locally to match the ones I devoured daily in the bakeries in France. Chu’s version was an absolute winner. The pastry was crisp and meltingly buttery, and the almond filling moist and delicious. Wow. A 10 out of 10 for this one. Chu also does baguettes and toasties which run out the door at lunchtime. Alex enjoyed the yummy thick sourdough slices in his ham and cheese toasty, though I’ve not yet sampled them. The one thing that disappointed me at Chu was the coffee. My long mac topped up came in a cup the size of a mini paper cup at a water dispenser, and was only ¾ full. I’d asked for a large one and for $ 4.50 I felt ripped off. I know some places serve small macs but this was ridiculously Lilliputian. That gripe aside, the sweet things on offer at Chu are compensatory. If you’re passing by William St in Highgate, pop in and grab a few bites for morning tea. Oh, and they bake a pretty mean loaf of bread too :)

This is quite possibly one of my favourite bakeries. Granted, I haven’t been to many, but this is definitely at the top of my list. This little spot is in the heart of Highgate and just a short walk from the amazing cafés of Brisbane Street. There’s no seating aside from a waiting bench, but with Hyde Park right across the road, why would you want to sit indoors anyway? Grab your Chu Puff and enjoy it out in the sunshine! I popped in on a Saturday afternoon after having brunch at Art Starter because I was feeling like something sweet. I didn’t mind the 10 or so minute walk because I knew there was something amazing waiting for me at the end. But for those of you who aren’t too keen on the walk, there’s street parking available. I ordered the iced matcha latte and looked in awe at my pastries as I waited for them to whip up my latte. As usual– staff were amazing. Iced latte– refreshing! Chu puff– surprisingly satisfying. If you’re in the area, give this place a shot. But don’t forget, they ARE a bakery, and therefore do the standard loaves you know and love.

A busy artisan bakery on the cusp of Hyde Park. Beautifully made donuts and pastries. Lovely coffee. Bottled ‘healthy’ juices. Nice staff. Expect to wait for coffees and food. Take your goods and enjoy them in Hyde Park. Expect to pay more than an average bakery as this isn’t your average bakery!

You know when you go past a eatery and see a crowd out the front — even on a lazy Sunday afternoon? Chu’s is one of those blink-and-miss-it gems tucked away next to Hyde Park and I honestly thought it was a cult bookstore or maybe a private home. Buzzing with happy visitors, I popped in to check out what the fuss was about and was very happy with a creamy take-away cappuchino and a lychee and raspberry chu puff, adding a crispy chocolate donut for afters. The crowd outside were enjoying their nibbles — there’s really no room inside to dine, but with the Hyde Park right across the road, I’d suggest heading there if you haven’t got the patience to wait and take your cakes home. They’ve got fairly mid-range prices(I’d hoped for a bigger cup), but the pastries are to die for. I’m going to try coming back earlier in the day to see more of the range and hopefully try every one of the chu pastries on the menu.

If ever there was a place to get a great freaking sandwich, this is it. Who knew tuna baguettes could be this amazing? Their toasts are great. The coffee is boss and everything is centered around some kind of dough. Heaven.

Chu Bakery has been open just a few months. In its short life, the teeny tiny bakery has amassed a very loyal following, often selling out of its sweet goodies. We headed there on what felt like a sort of pilgrimage. There’s just a few stools outside Chu. I had my sights on the gorgeous Hyde Park right across the street — we found a spot right under a shady jacaranda tree. Perfect. Z literally hoovered up his hazelnut praline éclair. It was spot on, I was lucky enough to have a very small nibble. It’s absolutely the best éclair I’ve ever tasted. The light choux pastry is golden brown and filled with decedent hazelnut praline cream. I took a little longer over my Lychee and raspberry chu puff, taking some photos, then savouring the pastry and raspberry cream. Hiding inside was the sweet lychee and boy was that a great flavour combo! Everyone seems to pick the ‘on trend’ matcha chu puff, but I really loved this version. Chu is top notch — check it out!

It always feel like a victory when a business with pitiable patronage is replaced by one that absolutely soars. The little deli that once looked over the park has since been moved on for this great little spot, and the locals(myself included) couldn’t be happier. They make croissants in a few different flavour varieties, there was one with coconut and coconut jam(it has a malaysian name but I can’t remember it), I think there was also a red berry one and a chocolatey one, as well as the classic plain croz. These are lost on me in favour of the toasties which are delicious. They also do ‘toasts’ — like a bruschetta concept but there are both sweet and savoury options. Having a patisserie with barista coffee right next to the park is an ingenious idea. Well done guys, well done. It has become a weekend ritual of mine to go down to Chu with my housie on a Sunday morning for a take away toastie and coffee, which we then walk over to the picnic tables in Hyde Park to devour. And we weren’t alone!

My friend, Jeremy and I decided to take a trip to Chu Bakery before his singing practice at church. So we went there at around 12 pm and expected Chu to run out of a lot of pastries and cakes. Even though we were so lucky to find a parking spot right outside of Chu(next to the public phone box), our hearts sank when we saw the long queue inside the bakery. As soon as we walked inside, we saw that Chu had replenished their stock of matcha yuzu as well as their croissants! We settled for one matcha yuzu, Boston donuts, almond croissant and strawberry cream tart. We also ordered the coffee from Chu and Jeremy said our order will be delivered to us. We didn’t realise that Chu has a take-away window for all coffee order, fortunately one of the kind staff took our coffee to us. The strawberry cream tart was another hit. Eating this was really easy, especially since the crust was quite solid. The creamy centre had enough sweetness to it and the taste of strawberry really spreaded out to the cream. We saw a tinge of pink when we took a bite into our tart! My favourite was the simple Boston donut. It gave us the pure joy to eat this. The dough was fluffy and soft. Would it be okay to have this for breakfast every day? The almond croissant was flaky and buttery with a sprinkling of powdery white sugar. I like how those white sugar makes any dessert look really pretty. The croissant smells really good too. Jeremy’s favourite was the matcha yuzu especially due to the sour yuzu jelly inside the pastry. I like how the yuzu jelly was in green colour as well, this could only mean that they put a thought into planning and making it. The next time I’m at Chu it will be due to their chocolate eclairs that I have yet to try.

Chu bakery was already buzzing with music and people at 9.30am on a sunday. A tiny bakery with just enough room to order and bus stop style seating, it is a much better option to order at the bakery and eat in hyde park. Having heard so much about the rasberry almond croissant and the chu puffs, my friend and I ordered these two delicacies as well as some wholemeal bread topped with hummus, chilli flakes and cucumber. I also ordered a large skinny cap for 4.50 and my friend ordered a green juice. While waiting for our order, we saw the bakers in the back rolling dough for the croissants. Their freshly baked bread was either sold out or still being made as there were no loaves on the shelves. ¤Insert sad face¤ We walked along to hyde park to consume our order. The raspberry hazelnut croissant was flaky, sweet but not to sweet and just melted in your mouth. The peanut butter raspberry chu puff was sweet, sour, buttery, peanuty, flakey and melt in the mouth delicious. But omg the wholemeal bread slathered with generous hommus was to die for. The bread was soft, tasty, springy and simply scrumptious. I have never used those words to describe bread but that’s exactly what it was. The hummus tasted fresh and the chilli flakes added just the right hint of spice to it. Yumm. Chu bakery you are definitely in demand for a reason. Oh and the coffee was extra hot, strong but not too strong and just the right amount of wake me up on a Sunday morning. What a great way to start the day!

My favorite local bakery. Grab something from Chu bakery(my favorite is Matcha Yuzu Chu Puff) and spend your afternoon in Hyde Park on a beautiful day — the best sanctuary you can find in Perth. On a side note, this bakery is tiny. It’s best for takeaway. There is no seats inside the bakery. So manage your expectation.

Chu — I Choo-Choo-Choose you! This brand new bakery sits proudly on the kitty corner opposite Hyde Park in a very leafy part of Inglewood. ‘Sweet dreams are made of Chu!’. The baked goods are every bit as spectacular in real life as they appear in the pictures. I took home a strawberries and cream tart, a praline éclair, a rose chocolate and raspberry Chu puff and a kaya croissant. The pastry chef has certainly honed his skills as the pastries are light and delicious and perfect in presentation. Each one is like a beautiful piece of art! I am a big fan of kaya, so it was a bonus to find a lovely, flaky pastry with a generous filling of coconut heaven! When I was in the store, I was so mesmerised by the sweet stuff it escaped my attention that they also offer a selection of savoury delights. It was only when we were leaving, that I noticed people seated outside, were happily tucking into what looked like the best and freshest looking open faced sandwiches ever! It’s good to know for next time. The fit out is neat and minimalistic, which works well and seems to highlight the baked goods on display. I am in love with the sexy light fittings, which have such a clever design. The café is light and bright and meticulously clean. The staff are young, fresh and enthusiastic. They are happy and helpful and provide service with a smile. Their attire is very chic and works well with the whole setup. So take your crew and visit Chu!

Chu Bakery is located in the heart of Highgate. Across the road from Chu Bakery, is iconic Hyde Park. On a beautiful weekday, I decided to drop by Chu Bakery to reward myself with some sweet treats for afternoon tea. One step inside this cute bakery and you are greeted with a friendly service, pastries galore with the fresh aroma of bread, as everything is made fresh in store. For my afternoon tea, I had the Fraisier Chu, Matcha Yuzu Chu puff, Rose Chocolate Raspberry Chu puff and a Kaya Coconut Croissant. I enjoyed the Fraisier Chu and thought that it was delicious — it’s smooth and soft with light creamy flavours and the perfect hint of sweetness. You can’t leave Chu Bakery without trying their signature Chu puffs, the Matcha Yuzu Chu puff and Rose Chocolate Raspberry Chu puff. I love both of the Chu puffs and thought that the pastry was executed very well, being light and crisp on the outside concealing a little surprise inside, like the yuzu jelly in the Matcha Yuzu Chu puff. The icing on top of the Chu puffs is definitely a matchmake in heaven. It’s smooth, flavoursome and creamy. I have also heard many good things about the Kaya Coconut Croissant at Chu Bakery and decided to give it a try too. Growing up in Malaysia, I am a big fan of kaya, bringing back many memories of having kaya toast for breakfast. I thought that the combination of kaya with croissant was perfect. It’s both flaky and buttery, complementing well with the smooth Kaya spread, bursting with sweet coconut flavours. If you have a sweet tooth, I highly recommend you to try Chu Bakery for their delectable and delightful pastries. Oh, I hear they also do a good coffee to go with your sweet treats too. With Hyde Park located opposite Chu Bakery, you can soak up the sun and indulge in your pastries while chilling out at the park.

came here for breakfast yesterday morning. It’s a nice place, but the products did have their ups and downs! We tried a bit of everything. Starting with the toast, our favourite was he hummus, cucumber and chilli flake toast. It was just the right amount of spiciness, creaminess and refreshingness! The avocado toast came second, I thought they put too much feta on the toast, making it way too salty, but the overall effect was good. The prosciutto toast was mediocre at best. The kata coconut and banana toast was way too sweet! It was literally unbearable near the end! Next up were the chu puffs. Their famous matcha puffs were of course the best thing ever! With a yuzu jelly centre that was both refreshing and provided contrast against the creamy matcha tea filling, it was heaven in your mouth! The chocolate Chu puffs were great too, with a very strong rose flavour throughout and subtle raspberry undertone. The croissants were great too! The kata coconut croissants were actually the best! Unlike the toast, they wasn’t too sweet and had the right balance of everything. The hazelnut dacquoise was too sweet and rich for my tongue, but it did tasted somewhat like a Ferrero Rocher! The strawberry tart was ok, but they had an amazing base. We also had the matcha latte, but it was disappointing though… Overall it was a great visit! I would definitely head back for more hummus toasts!

Small but packed with goodness! This bakery which located at highgate is a perfect joint if you are after freshly baked pastries/bread. They open early on weekends(even on Sundays) to cater for the early birds wanting their morning coffee fix and a hit of sugar. I had their matcha yuzu chu puff and Boston puff. The matcha taste alot like a freshly brewed green tea with a surprise filling as you sink your teeth into it! The Boston puff was surprising light almost donuty with a creammy custard inside. Oh so good! Their coffee is amazing too! Only drawbacks: they are not cheap and there is not much sitting space. Did not bother me though!

Arrived there today just after 8:30am and it was already packed inside — we were planning on grabbing a coffee but didn’t fancy waiting all day. By the time we left it was getting uncomfortably cramped inside. It looks like they bring produce out in batches, and it’s gone pretty quickly. We managed to grab two strawberry & cream tarts(outstanding), two croissants(super flaky), a brioche doughnut(interesting, not sure if I’d go there again) and a loaf of sourdough(really light and airy). That lot cost over $ 35 so it’s certainly not cheap, but then again the quality is outstanding so I wouldn’t consider it overpriced. Hopefully when the fuss dies down there will be more of a selection on offer, not that it really matters because whatever you get will be good.
