Upmarket um… market?
These guys (from the Chat Thai group) have worked out that places like Pontip and every other Asian grocer have paid zero attention to presentation and style. Presumably because its only us gwei lo’s who think that how a place looks and whether you can actually fit two people in an aisle is at all important.
But these guys have also worked out that a purpose built coolroom for greens and fresh produce, and putting damp newspaper over leaves will give the customer some comfort that the produce is cared for at all. Compare the way the produce is stored and handled at other places and Jarern Chai looks a cut above — even if the stuff is exactly the same and just as cheap.
Pontip still wins on overall variety and hard to get stuff but this place smacks it into the bleachers for presentation and stuff thats important to dumb white people even if it shouldn’t be.
