Great food! The only downside is the not-so-great customer service. I read the reviews on Unilocal and wanted to give this place a try with two other friends. We were visiting from the states and the food was genuinely very tasty. Our server also appeared to be the hostess and person who everyone went to when it was time to pay. He, however, seemed so disinterested in his job. We stood there for quite some time before he acknowledged us. Then another while longer before he threw some menus on our table and came back another while longer asking what we wanted to eat. He was quite unprofessional and rude. I didn’t want to give this place a poor rating based on him. The other servers seemed to do a much better job. They were smiling. Maybe we lucked out and got the one who was least interested in being there. Such a shame. Go for the food and shrug off the poor service if you get it.

Delicious authentic Chinese. Highly recommend the Cumin Lamb and Dried Chilli Beef toothpick. There’s also a ‘adult shop’ conveniently located directly across the road.

Stunning Chinese restaurant in Newcastle. Authentic and very tasty. The mapo dofu was one of the best I have had in Australia. Sichuan style but not too spicy for the average spice taker.

I’ve only been here once but it left a real Impression. The food was so tasty, especially the duck. The best fried rice around. Reasonably priced and nice friendly staff.

Pretty authentic Chinese food. Super loud at times so be prepared for a bit of a yell across the table.

While Sinofood still offers some standard ‘Australianised’ Chinese dishes, give these a miss and head straight for the exceptional and comprehensive Szechuan menu. A little pricier but there’s nothing else like this in Newcastle — it’s the real deal. A warning — the hot dishes are indeed that, absolutely loaded with chillies and szechuan peppercorns. But there are plenty of minimally spiced dishes too; this place is highly recommended for those with an interest in seeking out something different, but authentic, on the Newcastle dining scene.
