I can call many cafes to mind, but few would be chosen in preference to this one. The fit out is the currently fashionable ‘bohemian jumble sale’ look, with lots of dark wood and money carefully reserved for a few quality items to give an atmosphere of respectability only slightly gone to seed. The coffee is good, perhaps even very good, but what makes this place is the food. Specifically the baking. Their croissants, eclairs, lemon tarts and quiches are superior to anything I’ve eaten outside of Europe.(Possibly excepting one or two five star hotels and megabuck restaurants.) Yep, that good. The location is pretty good too. Plenty of sun out front and enough street action to watch and not enough to deafen. It is on quite a slope though. This means that one has to drink down one’s coffee before it can safely be left on the saucer. The outdoor furniture, while characterful, is spectacularly uncomfortable and it is this, rather than anything else, that stops me giving it a fifth star. If you know what good French baking is supposed to be like, check this place out. I live miles away but it’s fast becoming my local!
