History

Established in 2014.

The previous owner of the famous La Goulue French restaurant in Crows Nest, has opened up a new relaxed and informal Bistro and wine bar in the heart of Gordon.

Situated in the atrium of the Old post Office, Bistro de Philippe brings to the North Shore a fantastic combination of genuine French regional fares at very reasonable prices, without compromising quality .

Matching the food with unique French wines makes this gem of the north shore one of the best value for money eatery in Sydney.

This place is hard for me to rate because although it is good it is not great, as I was hoping it would be. The menu is small and heavily biased towards meat, which can be a problem if you don’t eat meat. I had the bouillabaisse, which was tasty but very small and they charged extra for a bit of bread to mop up the soup. My wife had a salmon dish which although nice, was not as described on the menu, that was disappointing, and quite plain, not what you expect in a French restaurant. The desert small but delightful. This restaurant has a lovely French atmosphere and friendly staff but I found it over priced for the serving sizes. Sadly not a place I’ll be returning to in a hurry.

We had a great dinner. The food was authentic French cuisine with a modern Australian approach. The service was excellent — the owner even took the time to sit with us to ask what we thought and share his views on the menu, just like a provincial bistro in France! We certainly will be back!

Very friendly atmosphere and great food. Meals are not too big or too small. Also a great selection of French wines that are not too pricey. It is very much a «hidden treasure» as it is secluded from the highway, but easily accessed from the train station at the rear.
