The Basilica of St Patrick

This is a beautiful building that stands out in Freo. I have witnessed a few wedding parties come out the door and I have thought it must be a stunning place to get married (if you are Catholc that it).
The acoustics inside are beautiful and they regularly hold choir and orchestral performances. Next time your passing and its quiet, pop in and sing out a chorus, it will make even a crow sound beautiful.

I’m not Catholic (or religious at all) anymore, but if I was, I would be all over this place. It’s easily one of the most beautiful buildings in Fremantle and houses a splendid pipe organ that I would love to get my hands on to make some secular music.
I used to come here for church services at Christmas time, which I highly recommend if you’re of a churchgoing persuasion. They would really make an effort to make Christmas mass special, including a fantastic evening Children’s mass that always felt like we were going to something very special. I have it on good authority that they still do that.
If you’re not a churchgoer, this is nonetheless a great Fremantle landmark to look at. It’s generally open during the day (although they have a lot of weddings at weekends) and is a nice place to wander in, marvel at the architecture and have a quiet moment.

St Patrick’s Basilica is a Roman Catholic Church located in Fremantle, and apparently it is one of four (or five, can’t remember) churches in Australia that has «minor basilica» status. Pretty cool, right?
It’s a magnificent building, and when I went inside I learnt that it took over 60 years to be completely done in the state we see it in now. They still do services, weddings, funerals, and confessionals.
