In addition to all the great stuff that everyone else has talked about regarding this store, they also sell BOCS tickets upstairs, along with t-shirts and at the back wall of the store is a DVD section. The local releases section is fantastic and is one of the three most extensive in the city(the others being at Fat Shan Records and Dada’s in the city). The vynil section is split into sections for alternative/pop releases and dance, with smaller racks for punk and metal/hardcore. If you are a record-buying obsessive, have a chat to Tim behind the upstairs counter on weekdays about getting onto their mailing list for new releases; he sends this out about once a month and it lists all the upcoming records in whatever genre you request. If there’s anything that takes your fancy, you email him back and he’ll have it in for you as quickly as possible, sending you a text message to let you know it’s in store. He’s also pretty handy if you want to order in something specific, though it has to be in print and it helps if you know what label or distributor has put it out. I do a lot of shopping online and at other stores and generally Mills will get it in cheaper than anywhere else.

I am quite the vinyl fan and am always going to record stores, with second hand records, you never really know what you are going to find, and you don’t want to miss out on that gem! The staff are really friendly and the array of different vinyl is awesome! I love the fact that it is bringing vinyl to life.

It’s a shame places like this aren’t a dime a dozen. As I walked in and started to browse the shelves, I wasn’t bombarded with Beyonce or Katy Perry CDs(THANKYOUUNIVERSE)! Instead, the shelves read like my most recently created playlist; Morrisey, Elvis Costello(there’s only one Elvis!), Eryka Badu, Incubus, and the likes. I was in musical heaven, which is just Heaven for me period. The guy who was working there just put the icing on the cake. In a heavy Jamaican accent, he greeted me with«hey man, let me know if I can help you right?» as I walked in. I think I was half eyeing him off and half checking out the musical selection.

Great indi record store that picks up the vibes of its Fremantle surrounds. The collection of CDs and vinyls is tailored to the true music aficionado, with classics through the ages as well as contemporary alternative and indi pop. The CD displays make for easy searching, and helps spark interest in those bands you didn’t know you were looking for. This is a really accessible record store — one of few left of its kind.

I have a fond affection for Mills Records, its the same kind of affection you might have for your loving Grandpa or an old family dog. It’s always been around, it’s consist and every now and then surprises you. They have every genre of music and ones you’ve never heard of before, it’s always interesting having a flick through their CD collections and discovering bands with crazy names and bizarre album covers. The guys who work here really know their stuff and it’s clearly a place people come to and ask for some advice on finding bands they might like. A genuine interest and love of what they’re doing is what keeps the place going and its reputation on the up side. This is also one of the few places you can go and physically buy your concert or festival tickets, if your not a fan of doing it online, or want to see what’s coming up, these guys can help you out! It’s the grungy CD store you see in ‘90s movies, the type that Heath Ledger’s character in 10 Things would escape to, and for me that’s what makes it charming and appealing. It doesn’t pretend to be fancy or know everything, it is what it is, a store that sells music and loves what music brings.

Mills eh– how we have forsaken you! As far as music stores go(in the real world– NOT the virtual world) Mills is a pleasant change to the«top of the pops» chain multi-nationals but it does have a certain mustiness that hasn’t quiet captured the underground buzz. Instead holds an endearing«dads old suitcase from the ages» mysteriousness. With an understated black sign out the front and the traditional sales rack, inside is a time warp– worn and torn posters add to the archaic feel and while the music covers a range of eras– this place is a fluro free 90’s. With a selections of Tees, vinyl, videos and posters as well as the CDs, this is an experience, tragically becoming fewer and further between. The guy at the counter was chill and the upstairs section is worth a gander for the treasure hunter and relic collector. If you are looking for a music fix in freo, or a gift for someone trapped in, or struggling to recapture the past– Mills is your man, so to speak! Mills a million.

Mills Records is the kind of music shop that is dying a slow and painful death. A tiny little record store that stocks loads of independent and underground music, it’s so positively 90s that you can’t help but explore it like some sort of anthropological exercise. What folly! A bricks and mortar music retailer! i wonder if anyone actually buy anything from here? I certainly hope so, because this place is Cool with a capital C. Every space is adorned with band posters, from the walls to the ceiling to even the scuffed wooden floor boards. Every single nook and cranny is crammed with music memorabilia, rather than loud and intrusive signs that scream SALEBUYNOWSPENDYOURMONEYCOMMONER. Which is really quite comforting if you find mainstream music retailers a bit in yer face. Their prices aren’t as cheap as other music retailers, and their stock might be quite selective, but Mills is the kind of place where you approach the young chap at the counter, take his advice and explore genres you’ve never really considered. The best thing about Mills(apart from their afternoon reggae) is that they manage to promote underground music without being elitist about the whole matter. These guys truly support the underdogs, and it’s a shame that more and more of these stores are disappearing.
