Very disappointed with the tangled web TUH created upon us making a claim. Assessment of claim is not an open process and TUH say they don’t have to even identify or name an ailment to reject a claim. We are forced to take our complaint to the Ombudsman and find a then find a better Health Insurance provider.

Up until about two years ago, The Teachers’ Union of Health was the only place I would go to get my teeth cleaned, checked on, and fixed. It was always a group activity(obligation?) of my family’s to go down to TUH together to get our dental check ups. The thing I liked most about TUH(if you can like anything about going to the dentist) is how nice, friendly, and accommodating the receptionist staff always was. One lady in particular always assuaged my fear of the dentist by asking me how my day was and giving me a warm smile. That meant a lot to me as a little primary-school-aged girl who was absolutely terrified when it came to trips to the dentist. I understand that they have a rotation system whereby you usually get a different dentist every time, but that was the thing that turned me off going here. It hadn’t been an issue for the many years I had been going there until one day, 17-year-old-me got a rather brash, quite unkind dentist who reaffirmed by doubts about dentists and why I dislike them so much. She was rough and ended my making me cry(embarrassing) and due to this unfortunate experience, it took me two years to go back to any dentist, let alone the TUH. Yes, I just got unlucky with my dentist, and yes I realise how irrational it may be to have a profound fear/dislike of dentists because of this experience, so I don’t hold TUH responsible; I just got a bad egg that day, and I’ve since found a dentist I love. However, TUH does give amazing concessions on optical and physio; highly beneficial for members of my family. I believe they also have a health point system that offers incentives and gives you points to get things at a great rate. TUH is a highly beneficial private health fund and has treated and rewarded my family very well.

I am lucky enough to still be included on my parents’ private health cover and even luckier that they’re with Teacher’s Union Health. I don’t know much about health funds, but what I do know about TUH is that they have a care centre in Fortitude Valley where its members can get extra-cheap dental, optical, physiotherapy, podiatry and more. Because my parents and subsequently, I, have the highest level of cover, I receive free preventative dental care, significantly reduced glasses, and can have a half-hour remedial massage for something crazy like $ 10. If you’re someone who has access to the care centre in Brisbane, it’s a great service. Check their website for prices. Note: you don’t have to be a teacher to take advantage of TUH health cover.
