I believe these guys may be closed permanently. I arrived at 8:30 to a rolled shutter and no answer on the phone. Iiiif they aren’t, and I end up going, I’ll change my review. :)

A gem & a favourite drop-in with some friends, Fifth battery coffee roasters, is a café that sits inside a converted half-cylindrical warehouse space, that resembles a World War 2 bunker. This makes sense as the café takes it’s name from the owner’s Grandfather who served in the 5th Battery 2⁄2 Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment. The décor is an eclectic mix of stained glass partitions, separating the garden deck from the funky street art decorated & corrugated iron main area. Near the counter is the impressive Diedrich Roaster, where one can nosily observe the roasting process. Situated at 23 Warry Street Fortitude Valley, if you’re not here for breakfast then you’re definitely here for the coffee. But of course. «Fifth Battery» is part of the Brother Espresso family which already has a loyal following & renowned for great quality coffee here in Brisbane. The long black coffee we had was strong, smooth, & slightly nutty & went perfectly well with the Brekkie Wrap($ 11). A delicious & juicy wrap containing, scrambled eggs, rasher bacon, marinated mushrooms, smoked tomatoes & rocket. Totally satisfying!

Great place for a quick brekky or lunch meeting. Love the cold-pressed iced coffee and the salmon brekky is good. I did have a wrap with asparagus which wasn’t as impressive though. On the whole, I do love this quirky joint.

One block from the Valley train station, this is one of my favourite weekday morning breakfast /coffee stops, and they’re now doing weekend breakfast and brunch too. Coffee is roasted in-house and available to buy for home. I recommend the cold drip coffee to appreciate the subtle flavours of your coffee, and the cold brew is ideal to take away through the summer. The food is fabulous and prepared fresh based on seasonal availability. Do yourself a favour: skip the train station food court and come here — it will cost the same but you’ll get quality all the way, not to mention the tranquility of the back garden dining area. Power points available if you’re looking for somewhere to plug in and punch out some work with great coffee and food on hand.

I love popping in here on the way to work. Coffee on a cold morning, cold-press on a sunny day and a sneaky early breaky on the occasion. Not too pricey, the food is always tasty and their strength is definitely in the quality and knowledge of their bean. I would say the staff is a bit hit and miss, but not enough to turn me off return visits. Best coffee option in the area :-)

Another hidden gem in the ever changing coffee landscape of Brisbane. Hidden away from the busier parts of Fortitude Valley, Fifth Battery is a great little place to stop by for a coffee. I haven’t personally tried the food offerings to this point, but work colleagues assure me that the quality is good and the prices are cheap for the area. What I can talk about is the coffee. Roasted on site, the seasonal blends and rotating single origin offerings are always great. Definitely ask them if you are unsure whether a particular blend/origin will be better as a black or white coffee as these guys definitely know their stuff and can definitely bring the best out of a coffee as they take it from the green bean right through to the end product. Service is usually good, but these guys must start early in the morning because by the afternoon there can be the occasional scowl or tired face among the staff. The location is away from the busy(and dirty) parts of the valley, and the stained glass windows and quiet garden out the back create a cosy atmosphere for you to sit down and take your time with your beverage. I do plan to stop in for food at some stage, but I have never been disappointed with the coffee here. If you are travelling up St Paul’s Terrace definitely take the time to stop in and grab a drink. You won’t be disappointed.

Cheerful place with coffee roasted on-site. They offer all the boutique brewing styles, including pour-over. Nice interior that was empty when I visited close to closing time. Reminds me of the coffee shops I go to in San Francisco.

Warry Street is not a part of Fortitude Valley I’d ever explore had it not been for a mission to visit Fifth Battery(part of the Brother Espresso family). Walking into the hanger-esque bunker you feel almost like you’re walking into a secret space for secret agent meetings. The coffee was a delight but the Breakie Burger(for a surprisngly cheap and chipper $ 10) was the real star: avocado, prosciutto crudo, vintage cheddar, sunny-side up egg and the best aioli I think I’ve ever tried on sourdough. You could forgo the sourdough and still have a darn good breakfast.

Been a couple of times now and I must begin by saying the coffee has been exactly what I have yearned for… its simply great. Both times I have eaten here the food has been reasonable but didn’t blow me out of the water, the service was mediocre and a little slow, but not to the point where I became annoyed. The food looks and tastes fresh and the best part is the value/price. All of the menu options are cheaper than everything else in the area and has something for everyone ranging from what looked like some beautiful muesli(I must admit I didn’t try it, but it certainly looked fantastic), the normal bacon and eggs fare and vege options too(All of which are around the $ 10 mark! — Incredible!). This place definitely looks like it is made of win and good, but I am yet to experience that entirely — I will definitely be going back to give it another shot(or 2) to diversify my food choices if not for the coffee alone. Most of the parking in the area is on the street and you will need to fork out a couple of dollars at the pay station if you chose to drive.

What can I say? Great atmosphere. Great coffee. Great service. Great breakfast menu. Heck, I was waiting for something bad to happen so I’d atleast have something to Unilocal about! Fifth Battery is great for anyone who loves a good cup and the smell of some roasting beans! And they use real chocolate on their caps and hot chocolates! The only reason I hold out that elusive 5th star is because they don’t have free wi-fi.

Part of the Brothers Espresso family, Fifth Battery makes up the Valley contingent of this group. It’s located down the Spring Hill end of the Valley, and if you’re coming from the mall you have to walk up past the station, the ferals on the street and past the adult store. But don’t be put off, this is just part of the adventure. Once you arrive at the strange building, which is a big metal shed or bomb shelter, you will be glad you made it. Fifth Battery staff really know and love their coffee. They serve their signature blend of coffee, as well as single origins that are ever changing. You can also buy the beans, and purchase coffee making paraphernalia to make great coffee at home. I personally swear by the Aeropress! They serve breakfast and lunch too. There’s a cute little outdoor garden area out the back, so head on back there with your coffee and enjoy!
