The clothes here are quite basic — plaid shirts, plain t’s, shorts and chinos for men. That’s pretty much my style in a nutshell, however, the clothes here just didn’t work on me for one reason or another. The proportions were not right for me at all. The shirts somehow made my already narrow arms look even more weedy, which is not ideal. And why don’t clothing stores have mirrors in their change rooms these days? Newsflash: people don’t want to parade out into the store to examine themselves in front of a single, communal mirror in the middle of the clothing racks while the sales person and everyone in the store watches on. Spend the extra $ 20 on some mirrors already! *Pet peeve*

To be honest, when I first saw this tiny place on the northern end of the Brunswick St shopping strip, I assumed it would be the same as all the other ‘basics’ stores around the area: plain clothes with big prices due to bearing some European label I’d never seen before. But this place is a basics shop for people who really do want affordable, clean-cut styles and, perhaps best of all, the designers are on hand to help with fits. Yes, this stuff is made by local designers, so carbon miles sweatshop labour Australian economy etc. Anyone like me who mourned the loss of Hem&Haw and the Bobbys Cuts store in the city a few years back will be excited to know that the mind behind both, Fredrick Jonnson, is one of the guys involved, and it’s a same approach here: just well-made, well-fitting and neat attire without the rip-off price tags.
