This is pretty much the primary queer health clinic of the inner north(inferred: sexual health clinic as well). The staff and GPs are exceptionally good at being sensitive and open-minded to the health issues of non-gender or –sexuality conforming people, which is seriously a breath of fresh air. Being in the waiting room is like being at a social event for the queer community — don’t be surprised to see people bump into and greet each other cheerfully when you’re there. That enough should be testament enough to how well-liked this clinic is!

Went here on the recommendation of some queer friends who lived near Northside. It’s pretty handy to where I live(it’s right by a 112 tram stop onon the St George’s Road) but it’s good enough that I’d travel out of my way to get there. I went for a routine GP visit(just dealing with seasonal allergies) but I was impressed with the range of services they offered and with their queer friendliness. I particularly liked that the patient intake form avoided asking questions that could be difficult for queer, trans, genderqueer etc people to answer(specifically, they didn’t ask gender), and that the doctor I saw phrased medical history questions in a way that was respectful to people of all genders and sexualities without making too many assumptions. I also look for doctors who aren’t fatphobic and who embrace health at every size. In this visit that stuff was only lightly touched on(via questions about my medical history) but I certainly didn’t experience any fat-shaming and I feel fairly confident that the clinic is pretty clued up on that front. The doc I saw was thorough and detailed in offering me options to deal with my allergies, and wrote down a list of both over-the-counter and prescription options, as well as long-term strategies. The clinic only bulk bills if you’re on a Centrelink concession of some kind, which I’m not, so it wound up being around $ 30 out of pocket before my Medicare refund.

Look a visit to the GP is never glamorous or excitedly anticipated but its a fairly common appointment. If you’re new to an area a question that may arise would be «Which Dr should I see?». The Northside Clinic has around ten different doctors in the practice so appointment availability is not really an issue and their late evening hours make after work appointments a preferable convenience. The clinic is super queer friendly, the slightly homo-erotic paintings that adorn the walls are a little over the top but adds character. So if you fly that rainbow flag rest assured because this place is non-judgmental and specialise in queer health. They also offer free blood tests through an internal service provider. Bulk billing is available, hooray for students! There are clean modern interiors and plenty of reading material, catch up on some Who Weekly trash mag gossip while you wait.
