Elizabeth Bay House

This is an enjoyable, quick attraction! Beautiful views of the gardens and harbor from the front of the building. I wouldn’t recommend the introductory video in the cold basement as an essential stop; frankly, I found it kind of weird. But I really enjoyed expiring the house. The people working there were super helpful and available to answer any questions! I’m not sure if that is always the way it is, or if they were more available because I was there during the wintertime (July 2015).

This beautiful mansion has an equally interesting history. If you’re new to the city or the neighbourhood, are playing tour guide to visitors, or are just plain curious, swing by Elizabeth Bay Mansion for a sticky beak. If you think the outside looks grand, you should see inside these four walls. It may surprise you to find out it’s actually unfinished (the owner ran out of money halfway through). Step inside to find out more about the building, including the wicked parties they used to throw here back in the day. Admission is $ 8 for adults and $ 4 for kids and concessions. Catch the train to Kings Cross and walk down, then pop into one of the local Potts Point cafes for a snack afterwards.

Elizabeth Bay House is more than a Colonial setting in the heart of the Eastern suburbs, is a gorgeous garden acreage which get a glimpse into a more «posh» part of Sydney life… One can find great joy lying on the manicured grass hearing insects, spotting lady birds and enjoying the warmth of the sun hitting your skin…
Protected as a heritage building the actual «house» was designed by
John Verge who created a gorgeous architectural delight which really encompasses the Colonia era. The house is massive with the ground floor encompassing seven rooms, including a library, drawing room and saloon.
The magnificent interiors reflect the glory years of the mid-1800’s with elegant furnishings and detailed wooden carvings. It’s a wonderful place for you to connect with your inner upper class persona as you peruse what life could have been like in the day…
Once you’ve toured around, why not stop off to the café for a refreshment… for a quick cuppa and a bickie.

Elizabeth Bay House was originally surrounded by a well-​known garden of 28.1 hectares, although today much smaller, this house was built in 1835 and was described at the time as the «finest house in the colony.
It’s a good example of colonial architecture, from Sydney’s fledging criminal history. You can come along and tour the entire house and get a real feeling of the history, for Adults it’s $ 8, Children/​Concession $ 4, and Family is $ 17. The house is on a headland and has some of the best harbor views in Sydney, so allow 1 hour to tour inside, and take in the beautiful garden and view outside.
Once you’re there, you’ll realise the collection of insects (on show, in contained acrylic) as the original owner Alexander Macleay’s insect collection was said to be the largest of any private collector, and nearly brought him to bankruptcy over many decades.
