There is really only one reason that I have ever visited this pub and that is to compare it to the Avoca that is directly across the road and I have to say that as far as I’m concerned the Avoca wins hands down. In a way this is a fairly ordinary pub and it has never really had all that much of an appeal to me. I have stopped by here a couple of times but I have generally been much more impressed with the pub across the road. A friend of mine has said that he thinks the meals are better here, but I have never really been that keen on trying it out for obvious reasons. The last time that I visited the pub they were doing some refurbishments, but from what I could see it didn’t seem to add all that much to the place. Okay, they do have a porch out the front where you can sit down, however it tends to be full of smokers from the front bar.

Had a friend in town over the weekend and wanted to take everyone to a great local. In the past I’ve experienced both fantastic service and amazing food from this place, unfortunately that high praise wasn’t warranted this time. We did arrive during a busy time without reservation, so I do give some points to the waiting staff who still found us a place to sit and provide us menus. We quickly chose what we wanted for dinner and ordered this, along with a bottle of red. Unfortunately they were out of this bottle. And another. So we settled for our 3rd choice on the drinks menu. The food came out in a reasonable time, but mine– a simple chicken schitzel, was clearly overcooked, and I couldn’t even finish half of it, it was so bad. The chips were good, though– all 5 of them. And yes, actually five. So few it was easy to count. I’ll stress with this review that only a few weeks ago I went to the Maid and had a very different experience– the food was amazing(chicken schnitzel, again), the chips were plentiful and the staff very nice. While the staff remain great, the food seems to nose dive once it gets busy.

I have always, sort of, avoided The Maid Of Auckland Hotel just because of what it looks like from the South Road side. Although an old building and the character and charm that it has, it doesn’t seem like an inviting hotel. it also has a reputation for being a bit of a bikie pub… However i recently went there on work event, and was pleasantly surprised at what i found. As you go round the back to the car park area the hotel has been extended and a lot more modern look greets you. Inside the hotel is quite modern with a small but ample pokie area, bar area, large bistro area and small courtyard garden which is a bit of suntrap and very nice addition. The menu is very good and they do serve all day. We had a set menu with several choices and the food quality was excellent! The beer prices are very good as are the bourbon! Having been there for this work event, i will go back again!

This attractive old pub has been a watering hole for over 160 years, serving South Road travellers with great distinction. Although for many of those years getting off that superhighway-would-be-if-it-could-be would have been much easier than it is today(an approach from the south is by far the safest option). While the walls of the front bar may have more stories to tell than it has seen New Years Days, there is more to this place than just a pub. However you will always see punters in the tables at the front enjoying the ambiance of Adelaide’s main north-south arterial road. The quality of the well run dining room is terrific, although while previously the Maid held a price advantage over its adjacent neighbour recently the prices — apart from the staples such as burgers and schnitzels — have taken an upward turn. The family is catered for — sports bar and betting for Dad, plenty of those horrible daleks for those who like to have a flutter and computer games to while the time away for the kids until the meal comes. All in all this is one of the best semi old fashioned pubs begrudgingly moving with the times.

…the laidback, old-fashioned pub across the street from the Avoca. Catering to an older, boozier crowd. In the Front Bar it wouldn’t be uncommon to find some pretty hardcore drinkers watching sports at noon(on a weekday). A place to down a brew or a few and if you do so in sorrow you might not be alone. Decent food and good servings. It doesn’t have the lively atmosphere of the Avoca, so you might expect to be rewarded with cheaper prices. In some cases yes, and there are good specials(cheap snitty Wednesdays, $ 12 including toppings), yet overall the meals are a tad moola-icious. It’s hard to tell from South Road, but there’s a drive through bottle-o around back accessed from Angus Ave.
