Foxy Bean

Our second visit in 3 days and another great inventive meal. Service is fantastic and food and coffee are at your table very quickly. I highly recommend a drop in for breakfast, brunch or lunch.
The best part is it turns into a tapas and cocktail bar on the afternoon.

Foxy Bean is a trusty old favourite of mine for a good breakfast.
It’s in Woolloongabba and the parking situation is a little difficult. Arrive early if you are meeting friends as it can take awhile to find a park.
It is massive, with both indoor and outdoor seating. I love the indoor area — massive wall murals (fox themed, of course!), some sneaky taxidermy up on the shelves and cute furniture… Overall it gives the vibe that you are hanging out in a funky den. Seriously, I love it!
Absolutely awesome coffee. As for food… My partner is obsessed with the Bushman’s Benedict — as far as I understand it’s a egg’s benedict mixed with some kind of mincey goodness. I don’t think he’s ever ordered anything else. I’m a fan of their avo on toast and their museli.
Service is always on point. Fast, efficient and friendly. And because of the size of the place it’s relatively easy to get a seat no matter what time you are dining.

The disappointment about this place was that I don’t think the kitchen hot plates have been cleaned for a while. I ordered the poached eggs and bacon, but the toast and bacon was burnt and tasted mostly of charcoal. The eggs were poached nicely, but they served the whipped butter in a packaged tub like at McDonald’s.
On the positives, my friend ordered the French toast with syrup and cream and that was tasty, although definitely for the sweet tooth.
Coffee was quite nice and the serving staff were friendly. The décor and furnishings inside had character and is a pleasant venue. Unfortunately couldn’t give more than two or three stars because the food was burnt.

Laid back Woolloongabba is full of hidden gems and Foxy Bean is one of them. Tucked away on Stanley Street it can be easily passed off as just another bar on a passing glance. However, this is just their foxy secret. Café cross bar by day, come Thursday to Saturday it transforms into a restaurant and bar at night with a full menu plus tapas under the name Foxy Drop.
As the name can suggest, the interior is adorned with modern art wall murals featuring foxes. Completed by leather bar chairs and wood panelled walls there’s almost a retro jazz lounge vibe to the venue. There’s also a classic pub-​style courtyard out the back with a handful of long benches and tables.
The breakfast menu has the usual avocado and egg based suspects with a few creative touches like the Bushman’s Benedict — chipotle braised beef cheeks, pork savoury mince, poached eggs, béarnaise and sourdough. The lunch menu, however, seemed a bit lacking and more like a menu that one would find at a pub, consisting of a few rolls, burgers, calamari, hot dog and fish and chips. This is redeemed by a current Modern Australian dinner menu which I’m excited to try on my next Brisbane trip.
On this visit I ordered the Smoked chicken brioche roll with double cream brie, basil sour cream, salad and chips. The presentation was somewhat as I expected given the lunch menu content and a bit average looking. They say never judge a book by its cover and this applied here with the tasty fillings of the chicken, cheese and herbed sour cream being a great combination. The brioche bun was a bit too soft and almost depressing, a little toasting would have made this an amazing dish.
Coffee was from Genovese and on point.
Service was good, although there was some confusion on where to pay as it was during the café/​restaurant transition time.
I have mixed opinions of Foxy Bean but willing to return for breakfast or dinner.

Cool laid back place to hang out with mates or meet new friends. Great food, good beer, super wine selection, they’ve got it all.

Can finally say I’ve been here for breakfast! Have dropped in on the odd occasion for a coffee– fan of the Genovese blend– but was yet to make it for the food.
It was a busy Saturday morning, but manged to secure the remaining seat in the main bar area with service that we couldn’t fault. There was a slightly longer wait where food was delivered upon the words falling out of my mouth «foods taking a little longer than usual» with the waiter apologising as we managed to order seconds after a big group outside.
Food was great– Mushrooms were fantastic, so fresh and earthy with everything on the 2 different plates we ordered being fresh tasting and full of flavour.
So whether your stopping in for a quick coffee or something to eat they seem to have accomplished both very well! The evenings also look good (will have to go and check it out) with a tapas and shared plate style for afternoons and dinners.

Had a group breakfast at Foxy Bean and it was awesome! Lovely, friendly staff with good service. Coffee and food was awesome. Everyone was really happy with their meals — the majority getting the «Bushman’s breakfast» which is pork/​meat amazingness on two pieces of toast with poached eggs, rocket and some kind of delicious sauce. NOM! Quite a small menu but seems like they do everything on there WELL! Few options for Vego’s too. Reasonably priced — two Bushman’s breakkys and three BIG coffees for just under $ 50.Trendy place doesn’t take bookings, but even with a bigger group of 8ish it didn’t take long to get a big table out the back :) Street parking but also heaps at Dan Murphy’s on the opposite side of the road.

A quick confirmation that this is indeed a relaxed coffee destination or bar and restaurant if you will. Spacious and comfy during day light hours and after dark apparently a buzzing scene.

I went there last Sunday for brunch. As I was heading down to the café, I could see the crowd of people in their waiting list. I was thinking this hipster place must be cozy enough that dozens of people want to wait to get in.
Apparently it didnt take more than 10 mins to get a seat. However the order took almost an hour! My drink was almost empty by the time the food arrived. They served good food, though. The coffee milkshake tasted the same with ice coffee so I’m not sure what makes it special.

We braved this place yesterday morning in peak times for a weekend brunch…
The place was absolutely packed out, in fact there was a small waiting list for a table. At the entry however, there is nothing that states to wait and be seated, so plenty of people just mosey on in, and unfortunately the guy behind the counter was quite abrupt at telling (yelling at) people to hold on and wait, which put a bit of a sour note to our meal.
Coffee is Genovese, which was reasonably made, and teas are loose leaf and from T2, although the leaf quantity was a bit on the low side in my pot of Earl Grey and the pot/​cups/​plates have a bit of a well-​used/​bashed look to them.
Food was fantastic though, and in very large quantities. I had the Bushman’s Benny — savoury mince on big chunks of toasted ciabatta with a nicely poached egg and a fantastic thick hollandaise sauce. I had heard whispers of the savoury mince here being amazing and it no doubt was. I could only finish about 2/​3rds of my meal, although my husband polished it off.
My husband had the Haloumi breakfast; large slices of haloumi, sauteed mushrooms, avocado, lemon, tomato and sourdough.
There are plenty of sweet and savoury options for everyone on their breakfast menu.
Foxy bean turns into Foxy Drop at night — a tapas bar, and we wouldn’t mind heading back to try a little bit of that action, although hoping that the abrupt guy isn’t there next time.

I have only been here for breakfast and each time they seem to get better. Late last year they had yet to buy the place next door and the coffee was pretty average. Went again middle of this year and was very impressed with the improvement, the darker atmosphere and old style couches and artwork really make this place feel relaxing and classy.
Their baristas are better and their coffee /​/​while not the most amazing is good. The menu is incredible and the team there are always ready to make you feel at home.

Great new Tapas menu. Decent coffee and possibly one of the most interesting interiors I’ve seen in a while. Great food and atmosphere, friendly staff.

Living down the street from Foxy Bean definitely has its perks — a nice coffee to wake up to on those mornings where you just can’t get out of that post-​awakening grump, and having the awesome quotes they put out on the chalkboard to look forward to everyday.
The genovese coffee served here is always done amazingly, always to the same standards. The ambience is set with beautifully selected tunes as well, making those dine in moments even more enjoyable.
For lazy mornings, the breakfast menu is absolutely yummilicious! So far my favorite still has to be the bacon and egg toastie — just because it’s one of the easiest things to eat while catching up with friends and yakking endlessly.
The lunch menu looks beautiful as well — the fish and Chips were great when I tried them. Sadly due to allergies the rest of the menu was pretty much unavailable to me, but that’s besides the point.
Looking forward to an excuse to come down for tapas!

There may be foxes (my possible «spirit animal») all around the newly decked out interior of Foxy Bean (and by night Foxy Drop, a super cool wine lounge and tapas bar), but that didn’t influence my instant love for this place. I’d visited a few times before it closed temporarily to refurb and upon visiting after its reopening — it has only gotten better.
When we popped in they were preparing to close, yet the owner was still on for a good chat and happily made us coffees and tempted us to try their (almost all gluten free) cake selections. The oat and fig loaf was several mouthfuls of deliciousness and the coffee (Genovese) was perfect to warm us up on a chilly afternoon.
I won’t say much more because I want to save it all for an update once I have the pleasure of trying Foxy Drop.

Some kinds of coffee are not at all sexy — International Roast served in chipped enamel mugs by your grandma, for example — but you’ll find only the foxiest Arabica here. The guy who I assume is the owner/​barista has funky dreadlocks and the music is tres chic as well, with the latest ‘Florence and the Machine’ featuring strongly on my last visit.
And if that isn’t enough to like, they have a nifty little outdoor courtyard. After you order you have to go back through the front door and onto the footpath to access it though, because they don’t want you cutting through the staff-​only area to get their (fair enough).
My poached eggs and toast were expertly cooked and the bread was very good. As for their foxy Genovese coffee, my cappuccino was brilliantly silky and it looked like the chocolate may have been a higher grade than you might find at some other places. But that’s pure speculation…

Foxy Bean is one of the more hidden cafes in Woolloongabba. It’s on Stanley Street, leaning towards East Brisbane territory, and it often gets missed (even though it’s located quite close to the Woolloongabba Antique Centre which is a hub for locals).
I like this place because it feels so homely. You get the feeling that the staff are nice to you, not because they have to be, but because they actually think you’re alright ey, love. The barista especially, has a particularly dry sense of humour. The barista who made my coffee this morning made a remark like «I put a lot of love into my coffee, so it should taste alright. If it doesn’t, go home.» I took my coffee outside, and am happy to report, it tasted lovely.
The sketchy drawings on the wall are of iconic places near Foxy Bean, like the Story Bridge. It’s a cute added touch. (Who hasn’t wanted to draw on the walls of their room at one point or another?)
While I was there, I didn’t hear someone leave without being addressed by their name. «Take care, Phil!». It’s obviously a place that draws in regulars, which means it’s good enough for people to keep coming back to. One thing for certain is I’ll be back, for more of the snappy ‘nah, just jokes’ service, and that lovely coffee.
