I remember my aunties salon in the 80’s with its chrome seats, Marilyn Monroe on the walls and that distinct pungent smell of peroxide burning a hole in my nose cavity. Salons these days, like the rest of the world, are going organic. Especially in perennially current Double Bay. And Joseph Mourad, located in the suburb of the Eastern Suburbs, is no exception. His salon still actually evokes the eighties. There isn’t the sleek modern lines you would find at an über-cool inner-city salon… Or the choice of only two brands of exorbitant hair care… Or staff that look like they moonlight as vogue models. No. Jo’s is a simple salon, humble in aesthetic, yet modern in technique. Jo has created plastic«foils» which are washable and re-useable. They can sometimes hurt a little,(as you can imagine a whole head of hard plastic as opposed to alfoil would!) however you feel elated, or elitist, as you’re doing your bit for this wonderful earth of ours. Jo also uses an organic, chemical-free bleach. I don’t really understand how that works, but hey, it doesn’t smell and it doesn’t affect my nose like a coke addict on a bender. There may be a thousand products scattered on bizarrely placed shelves, but the staff are sweet, the prices are surprisingly reasonable for the area, and the end result. well you can see for yourself in my profile photo. Blonde is hard to get right and as I have tried plenty of salons, I have realised that it doesn’t matter what the décor is like, as long as you walk out of there feeling like a million bucks, then you’re onto a keeper.
